Did you use the Hedman 68600 headers? yes
The "black coating" burns off them on first use.
Mine smoked like crazy! I thought something was on fire.
I've never had other headers ever do that!

But yes.. the choke will in fact choke your engine with too much fuel causing it to sputter and flood.. and it will black smoke out the exhaust. I've just set it to fully open and have been compensating with the pedal until warm

Do not treat a carbureted engine the same as fuel-injected. If you flood the engine.. the only solution to starting it is to HOLD DOWN the throttle to full throttle (not pumping it) while cranking, allowing a lot of air into the engine (which will mix with the excessive fuel). Usually under these conditions, it will sputter to a start and clear up with more open throttle. Spark plugs wet with too much fuel may not fire up... but letting them sit a few minutes usually helps. Or like I said.. wide open throttle while cranking. Never pump throttle if already flooded.

Yes.. fuel pressure from tank must be regulated down to about 6psi for carb use.
Too much pressure will flood the fuel bowls.

Nice "driving video"... but does it only go backwards? lol I went up and down the driveway twice before I put the grill on and went for a drive.

I went to leave for work today when I went to put it in reverse I heard a pop, the pedal hit the floor and then there was a big ol puff of smoke. :banghead: I'm ready to be done for now.

Anyone who is thinking about re-using the 4l60e and watching this thread I can report that it appears to be working fine.

My check engine light is on. I should go prank the guys at O'reillys (since they are the only ones I know with an obd1 scanner) :D Ask them to point me in the direction of my fuel injectors, or egr.... :rolling:

Fixed the brake line, had a pinhole in the front right line right at the coil in the line. Went to bleed the brakes and the passenger side bleeder broke :banghead: I just put it back together and the brakes worked pretty good still so I went Autozone and got one of my coworkers to set the carb up for me. I don't think my efans are working, it hit 210 and then it went up another bar so I turned it off and just hung out for awhile. After letting it cool off I left and had no problems going home. I did figure out that the transmission isn't shifting. It moves pretty good for only being in second (?) :D  . I checked the codes and got 22 (tps), 34 (map), 43 (Electronic spark control), and 54 (EGR). Since the last 3 are all disconnected and the fact the tps is one of the sensors that controls the transmission I think that is my problem. I had to lengthen the harness to reach so I will double check my wiring and then buy a new sensor if it doesn't fix it.

I'm not bothering with fixing the trans/computer issue. I have a th400 that I am putting in. I removed the subframe to replace it. I haven't put it back in yet. I was planning on cleaning a lot of stuff up while I had everything apart, but I think I will do some stuff, but not the whole list.

I did (hopefully) fix the problem with pulling gas from the tank. I removed the fuel pump (the actual pump, not the sender) and the skinnier portion (visible in stock picture) was just over 5/16". I used some sand paper and a file to bring it down to be able to use a 5/16" compression fitting and a small piece of 5/16" brake line to extend towards the bottom of the tank. I figure if people use compression fittings on high pressure brake lines it should be able to seal in the gas tank.

Image

I made some new captured nuts to weld onto the body for the tank straps. I need to clean the area around the holes and then :weld: Then I can put the gas tank in and I'll be 1 step closer to driving my van again

I am not using it. I have the stock fuel filter and an additional filter inline. I figure that should be enough. We will see if it clogs I guess.

I got the new nuts welded in. I need to get the fitting to adapt the pump output to a 3/8 rubber fuel line. I also need some new hose for the breather tube for the filler neck. Then I will put the tank back in. I want to clean the engine up a little bit before I put it back in as well. Just cosmetic cleaning. It was running fine with no leaks last time so I should be good. I think the header flange gaskets were leaking though.

I recently got a sand blasting cabinet so I will probably be cleaning and repainting anything that will fit inside. Starting with the filler neck and the vent tube (no pic :whack: ).
101998

I had to take the sender out of the tank again. I ended up cutting the end of the pressure line off so I could slide a hose over it. I got the strap bolts started before I realized I had to take it all back apart. :whack: When I took it out a second time though I removed it the correct way (driveshaft side bolts) and it went in so much easier than when I was trying to put it in by the outside bolts. Regardless its all in and hooked up. Next I need to get the garage cleaned up some more so I can fit the new frame in with some room around it.

Plans quickly changed. I got slapped with a "notice of violation" for the van being inoperable. It stated I had 3 days to do something with it. So I am putting it back together.

At this point The steering stuff and most of the suspension is on. Engine is on. I will be putting the transmission on next. I thought I was going to use a TH400 I had, but I didn't realize it had a fixed yoke and I need quick turn around so 4l60e going back in! At least it means I won't have to deal with as much stuff to get it going again.

Getting closer. I'm trying to find someone to help with the insertion. So far no luck. I'm gonna take a break and if I can't get anyone then I guess I'm going solo.

You think resting it on the bump stops will hurt anything other than possibly the bump stops? They're brand new poly bump stops. I started to try to put the springs in and immediately realized it wasn't happening. So I'm hoping to just get it all underneath and attached to the van then undo a ball joint and put the springs in.

Leeann: Do you cringe whenever you see something like "didn't realized"? I fixed it in my last post.

Matt,
What Code are you accused of violating?
Is that a neighborhood (HOA rule) covenant or municipal ode; and what is the penalty for violation?
I've never seen that before, but then I live out in the county, where things are a bit more relaxed.
I visited a friends house one time. He lived an a very Hoitey-Toitey (sp?) neighborhood on it's own golf course. I was told I had to park in the driveway. He put a piece of cardboard under my car, just in case a drop of oil was lurking there. ( None was on the cardboard after 30 minutes, so I got a clean bill of health, and I did not have to clean his driveway) The street has plenty of space, but parking on the street was not allowed; and nobody was allowed to leave a car outside the garage overnight.
Garage doors had to be closed during the day, unless you were actively going in and out. I never visited his house again.
I could not consider living in such a place, even if I could afford it.

I wouldn’t think it would hurt poly bumpstops at all.

And yes, I do cringe, but I do try not to get all grammar police-y on people. When I know it’s a genuine mistake, and that is sometimes hard to tell, I might give someone a hard time because I know they won’t take offense to it.

No HOA. Just not supposed to have inoperable vehicles in city limits. Which according to my city is a vehicle that can't start and drive. The house nextdoor is a rental and the owner a retired officer. So I'm sure he just called in a favor or something.

Another detail I didn't mention is that it didn't just say 95 astro it said all inoperable vehicles (I'm going to have the 95 done hopefully. All that leaves is the 04 AWD, the 75 civic, and an 86 nissan 300zx. The nissan just showed up though so I don't think it would be fair since it says 30 days on the tag, but who cares about fair right? So I'm hopefully going to borrow/rent a trailer and move all the cars to a friends house and then move them back later. Maybe one at a time or something :confusion-shrug:. All the cars have current registration on them too. I guess it doesn't matter :banghead:

Springs are in as well.

Can someone tell me which output goes where (front/back) on the mastery cylinder?

Will the 4L60e work without power in gears/positions 1 and 2?

Mental list of stuff to do:
I got the power steering lines hooked back up. Steering shaft hooked up. My ebay radiator is out of storage and ready to be put in. Heater core is almost hooked up, I need a straight connector for it. I accidently pinched the harness between the body and engine. I am going to wait for daylight to try and get it unstuck without undoing the frame mounts. I have to run new brake lines for the front and reconnect to the line that is running to the back since I removed the ABS module. Need to bolt the converter to the flexplate. Install distributor and wires. Hook fuel lines, throttle cable up to carb (that also needs installed). Driveshaft needs a new rear u-joint and reinstalled.

Can anyone tell me what plugs in here? Its' right behind the battery. I've got the harness that goes on the stud on, but I don't see any other connectors in the area.

I got the wiring unpinched. At first I was trying to just work it to try and get it loose. It wasn't working, so I just undid the subframe mounts and jacked up the corner of the body for enough clearance to move it. All wiring is hooked back up. I am going to try and rewire my toggle to the distributor and fuel pump so it comes on with the key.

How much of a difference does the cargo van coils make in a passenger van? I put some cargo coils in and 2 in drop spindles, but the van doesn't seem to be any lower. I'm hoping it just needs to settle, but dang it's kinda disappointing right now.

Also talked to the local PD and they said if its moveable, as in 4 wheels and steering with current registration then it is considered operable. So I guess that means I'm in the clear.

Since I wasn't in a rush anymore progress slowed. At first I couldn't get it to start again. I did the same thing as last time though. Watched the valves and guessed at the timing. I figured I learned the solution last time so it shouldn't be an issue. Wrong. I could not get it to fire. Finally I just pulled the plug and threaded in a compression tester hose and stuck a latex glove on the end so I could watch for when the air stopped coming out while I turned it over by hand.

I PM'd a few people and confirmed nothing was plugged in here.

I still had the harness from the G30 so I found a relay with a pigtail and re-purposed it for the fuel pump and distributor. I used the black/pink wire that goes to the injector. Since it is ground switched the power is on in start and run.

The front is almost the same height as the rear and my leafs are just about flat. So I think it's lowered, but the springs I put in are must be pretty fresh.

If you look at the distribution block it's got 2 different fitting sizes. The larger one is for the rear. Which matches the front reservoir (small one) being for the back. All I had to do was reconnect to the rear line since I never took it out. The fronts I have to re-do. I started to make progress I almost got the line from the block down by the crossmember connected to a Tee. It started raining and it's now dark out so a job for another day (probably tomorrow).

I bought front and rear swaybars and had them sitting in the closet with the radiator. I installed the front. It's really easy without the 2 connecting bars attached (see pic) on the 2wd atleast. I used jack stands to hold the bar up and I put the links in just got everything started on the links. Then I put in the mounts. Last I tightened down the links. Now just to finish the brakes and alignment and I should be ready to go for a drive. :bouncy: :bouncy: I weighed the stock bar vs the Bell tech. 10 lbs vs 30lbs. Ought to make a big difference.

I think the stock bar I weighed was on the new frame (2001) when I got it. The one that was on the van originally is a larger diameter and a little heavier. I didn't weigh it. I took it to the gas station and $46 later I had the tank filled.

I had some brake lines that I hadn't tightened down enough so they were weeping a little. Tightened them down and brakes firmed up. Had to knock a wasp nest off the back of the sliding door. Wasn't a big one, about the size of the palm of my hand. Then after driving it around for a little bit I rented a uhaul and picked this thing up. I haven't taken any pics yet, so here is one from the ad.

Anyone want to guess what it is?

I knew before I cheated and looked. in high school we stripped one down including the doors, and left it parked in the woods by the Connecticut River, we beat the absolute crap outta that thing before it gave up the ghost.
