Cam's AWD Astro Camper Build

Postby costman13 [OP] » August 7th 2018, 1:33am

Hey all!

I've realized that I don't have a proper build thread going here on AS.

Re: Cam's AWD Astro Camper Build

Postby costman13 [OP] » August 7th 2018, 1:44am

I am pretty focused on this van being a very functional camper build.

Here are some camper progress photos -

Stripped the interior, used noico sound deadener everywhere and insulated with 3m Thinsulate and a closed cell, foil back insulation (on the floor).
IMG_7197.JPG

Added tongue and groove on the ceiling.
IMG_7248.JPG

"Framed" in the windows to make it easier / cleaner to build to.
IMG_7381.JPG

Added some small & bright flush mount LED lighting (4 of them).
IMG_7382.JPG

Added subfloor & vinyl flooring.
IMG_7560.JPG

Primed and painted the tongue and groove walls.
IMG_7553.JPG

Started the cabinets!
IMG_7548.JPG

That's it for now.

I am hoping to have the cabinets finished up this weekend.

It's 5/16" pine tongue and groove from The Home Depot. Pretty inexpensive and super easy to work with.

I used self tapping sheet metal screws to attach 4 1x2" nailers to the existing "ribs" on the ceiling. I then screwed into those using some small self tapping wood screws.

I pre-stained all the wood prior to installation.

Very good idea -- just so I'm clear you drilled the 2x1s into the metal that is still protruding in the picture below? (i.e. the ones where the dude's fingers are?)
maxresdefault.jpg

Can you shoot some detail photos of how you dealt with the area around the slider?

I've always liked the wooden ceiling look. Even the wife looked over while I was browsing and said "ooohh".

Agreed, more ceiling pics. I've got a headliner job in my future, and I'd like to get rid of the cloth and fiberglass look.

Exactly.

I used self tapping sheetmetal screws to go into the thin braces that drop down from the main roof.

I'll see what I can do without removing all the trim at the slider. It's quite simple. I started on the drivers side and went until I has to notch around the slider track. I made sure to cut out a few slots in the tongue and groove so the trim will still "click" in.

My van is the same color as yours, but with the cladding the same color as the body. Now that I've seen yours with the lift and larger tires, I'm itching to do mine. It won't be for a while if I do it, and it still has to fit in the garage after because the desert heat kills all of my plastic components if the van is left outside. I guess after 19 years with me, the van deserves a makeover.

I love what you're doing with your van.

Very nice -- even just pictures of that area with the trim clicked in would be nice. I was mostly wondering if you could maintain the trim in that area after adding the wood, so you've already answered my question.

Sure thing!

I follow Into The Mystery channel as he ran an Astro camper for a couple years I think, though now he's into an Express.

He has some good ideas and builds, but nothing quite as nice as what Cam is up to here. Cam's just looks CLEAN!

Nice work!

Here are a few photos of the slider area. No real magic happening here. Just some careful cutting and notching to make as clean of a fit as I could generate. Feel free to ask any questions. I can also pull that trim if you'd find it helpful.
