Project PigPen... by Wimptech

Postby WimpTech [OP] » August 18th 2018, 5:24pm

AstroSafarian Universe... meet van #4, codename: PigPen, the $450 wonder van. You might be wondering.. why PigPen? All shall be revealed below...

Image

Image

This ia a '97 Astro LT RWD with some real unique options that I am building as a pilot program for a home based van refurb business, which I think i'll name WimpTech's Fabulous Vans... or WTF Vans for short ;)

Project Scope:
Create a RWD daily driver to be used as a Plumbing Service Van for a friend's 2 person business. This will include:
* Full custom shelf/ rack w/ tool boxes
* KanBan inventory system (commonly used items w/ min/max levels)
* Custom roof rack and storage
* Integrated tablet based info center (Maps, Torque,Calendar, etc)
* Custom floor console (ala Lumpy console) https://www.astrosafari.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=96057

The Good:
* G80 limited slip... on a RWD?! WTF
* GTR (3.73) gearing
* LT package so dual front power seats, one of which will be going into the misery machine!

The Bad:
* Runs like C R A P... huge vacuum leak, bad dizzy, needs a tune up, stalls out, the whole bit
* Trans shifts slow
* Airbag light on, code B1026
* Speed sensor errors
* Cyl #6 misfire under load

The U G L Y
Well, there's a reason we call it PigPen. It all started when I pulled up on the house it was at. There was a layer of dirt and grime I could literally see from down the street. The previous owner Daniel (super cool guy) had it up on blocks which made the rear axle look bent in, I almost ran away right there! It was used for a work van hauling granite tiles n such. Under the hood looked normal for any van with 186K on the clock, oil was due but clear. PO said there was overheating issues and the radiator was drained so that wasn't a help.
Then I took a look inside and that's where the name came from...

Note the Charlie Brown toy on the floor

Special thanks to CopperFireMist and TurnNBurn for the technical assists for the tow home!

Its gonna be a hell of a ride so stay tuned!

3.73 and a G80?! Score!

But yeah, that’s even worse than my ‘99 when I got it, though the rivers of coolant on the carpet sucked.

Pigpen is rather appropos.

The cool thing about it is the lack of rust.

If you bought a $450 Astro in OH the lower half of the van would be a dissolved.

450 seems kinda high. Good luck.
How many sensors, fuses or computers does a Bw4472 need? Zero.

Depends on which parts you are offering and their condition.

I could use a new left rear quarter panel. I presume the front plastic parts are all staying in place.

I doubt it is that unusual, just because it is a RWD.

This looks like an abused and neglected van.

It's decent just dirty. No rear heat version, missing the trim piece for back seat belt surround.
I'm in SoCal, Ventura, come n get it! Available in about a month.

It's possible, but he said it didn't hit red. I won't know for sure until i get some miles on the coolant ...and look/ analyze for oil. Starts and drives fine, less the issues i noted. Here's for hoping....

Mmusicman wrote:I doubt it is that unusual, just because it is a RWD.

So i hear, I've never seen it but this is only my 2nd RWD, all good. I think a tune up, EGR clean and vacuum lines should get it there, we shall see. If not... PARTS FOR SALE!

Day 2...

EGR was stuck, some carb cleaner and finesse and its all better.
Vacuum lines were garbage as suspected. All replaced and i'm back up to 17hg at idle, got the vents back too.

Heating up issue was 2 fold ... bad fan clutch, leaky radiator. I'm running flush through the junk radiator before replacing.

Accidentally busted off an AC line, after i charged it of course. Realized it was for rear AC which i have to pull anyways, so it all just came out. Low side direct to the dryer, pulled out the T on high side... all better. I also replaced low side Schrader since they like to leak.

Now, just dizzy n tune up and she should purr like a puppy... i hope.
After that, door lock buttons, pass window, shocks, tires, alignment, trans service and fluids then it's on to the interior!

Actually, isn't 187,000 a bit low on the miles for that many years? But it IS right in the window for GM's famous disappearing LIM gaskets....do you own or can you borrow/rent a cooling system pressure tester? I would actually take a LONG hard look at the water pump, too.
I know, you don't want to spend a pile of coin throwing parts at this thing before it proves worthwhile but the pump is WAY simpler to do with the rad out and you said you were swapping out the fan clutch, so...…
I feel your pain on the AC line thing. Probably wondering if you traded Cluster Headaches for a "different" kind of cluster?
Looks like a solid starting point, hope it goes your way.
-M!ke-

EDIT

P.S. Hope the Charlie Brown toy got a cleanup and a place of honour on a shelf in the garage?
Move along....all is well.....return to your homes.....nothing to see here.

$hit... that's a good idea, i tossed it but i can get it back. Strap it to the front grill like toy story3.

Thanks man, need to replace the radiator first since the system isn't currently sealed, then yeah the LAPS had a tester i can borrow. This thing has been a sweetheart, no headaches at all except for the one i made for myself.
