The beginning of something great! 04 AWD Astro

Postby Uskimborik [OP] » November 15th 2019, 2:26am

Howdy everyone,

Ive been a lurker for a while admiring all the awesome builds everyone has. Finally found a a deal on a van so now I can join the club!
Recently bought a 2004 AWD with 208xxx miles for $600. Has a new tranny with 30k miles on it, new radiator, and various other small things that were replaced by the original owner. It's putting out a p0301 code so hopefully I can tackle that issue soon. Any advice on what to do or things to look out for is much appreciated. Glad to finally own my own Astro!

Welcome!

Plug, wire, cap, rotor....that wire can pinch out where the engine cover slides into place. The wire, once pinched, can ground out. The plug may be fouled or the insulator cracked. The cap could have a crack, the rotor could be not making good contact.

Too many possibilities to guess without further investigation.

I was pretty stoked to find something at this price range for AWD. I think the original owner was happy to hear that the van was going to be back out on the road camping like he was using it for.

Apologies to the original poster, Uskimborik; I WAS going to edit my previous post so as not to "threadjack" your thread but decided to leave it so it doesn't seem like I was trying to hide or sanitize anything. I SHOULD have welcomed you to the forum, which I would like to do now at this time.
Hope the van treats you well and that you get that code nailed down soon.

So I was finally able to start wrenching on the van. Noticed some fluid coming from the rear right wheel. Inspected a little further and was lucky it was just a leaky break line. Also figured since the original owner said the parking break was basically non existent that I should inspect a little further. When I took off the wheel the parking break shoe was bare metal.

Everything was going swell on the left rear break assembly. Got everything disassembled and cleaned and put together with little problems. When I started to re assemble the right side I accidentally sheared the head off the bolt of the retaining clip for the parking break shoe.

I was pretty bummed about that. Had to remove the right side axle to get to the screw. Good thing that whole process was fairly easy. Slapped it all back together the next day and it was smooth sailing from there.

Now i'm just waiting on a OBD2 sensor coming in the mail so that I can start diagnosing the misfire issue. Also going to change the radiator fluid, oil change, and break fluid change. I don't think the fluids were properly maintained by he previous owner.

So while I was doing the rear breaks I noticed that I have Disk Breaks instead of drum breaks in the rear. Is that something that comes stock or was that and addition because I see a lot of people doing disk break swaps?
