Went out to the van today to continue my hunt for the leak before heading to work. I went ahead and took a shot at removing the headliner and I've gotten the rear one practically off and didn't have time to finish the front so I could take everything down

1209191201_HDR-picsay.jpg

Still getting some leaks at the holes. I gotta find a way to plug them. I noticed that the water would run down the seat belt post. Not sure if it always does that or if that's where it's going with the headliner down
1209191202b-picsay.jpg

Looks like this is where the water ends up sitting. This area of the headliner is usually soaking wet and water puddles in the cup holder underneath it.

:weld: Finally got the headliner down. The roof seems to be fine but I did find a few things.

1210190957_HDR-picsay.jpg

Water looks to be pooling in this pillar. I'm guessing the windshield is to blame. As you can see, I broke the trim. Never fails

With it down, I'm going to sit in the van while it's raining and hopefully find the leak(s). What hardware have others used to seal the roof rack holes? I plan to ultimately have a roof rack and may continue to use the factory one. I haven't decided yet so I don't want to permanently close them. Just keep them from leaking right now.

Didn't rain hard enough for me to see an obvious leak before I had to leave. However, i think this is my problem area. This is the most soaked area of the headliner and clearly having a water issue.

Does anyone have a part number for this molding?

1210191258_HDR-picsay.jpg

For the rust in that seam my best guess is to spray a rust converter in there. Nothing else I can really do, right? I want to see what's under that molding but i don't want to take it off until I have something I can put back in it. I really think that's my main water leak issue.

I am not sure of the Part Numbers - they are probably not avail for sale anymore.
I got a set off a Gen II for our Gen I at the JY.

After seeing them on both Gens - I can assure you they are not involved w/ 'gasketing' or 'sealing' anything.
They simply & decoratively cover the seam from roof to side panel.

Pulled it off and found these holes. Also evidence of corrosion. Does the jagged metal in this area look normal? Seems like bad fit and finish but I guess that's what the molding covers as you suggest.

Ended up using a wire brush to clean it up. Got as much of it as i could. Figure I'll pit some rustoleum and then some silicone.

Not sure where these holes go to but half the toothpick goes in. If water goes in there, it seems likely it will come out on the other side where my problem area is

1211190941b_HDR-picsay.jpg

And look at this seam. Water and moisture go in there which also looks to be the trouble area on the inside I took a picture of yesterday.

Put some flex seal tape to see if my suspicions are correct. I think rain is in the forecast for Saturday. The hose didn't leak but I want a constant flow to see if my cup holder and armrest stay dry. I plan on doing a bedliner paint job so I'm not worried about damaging the paint when I remove it

Holy crap. I have no idea what some moron thought he was doing, but wow. The holes usually are for push-pin things that help hold the rubber down securely, but those other spots are pretty bad.

Got a suggestion on "fixing" it? I was thinking about just putting some rustoleum all around it, then some silicone or caulk to level it, and then the molding old piece on top. Not worried about aesthetics. Just want the water issue to stop and ideally keep additional corrosion away.

I would have my husband pull out the MIG and fill in any cracks, holes, whatever, then put the molding back down.

Other option is to wire-brush and treat all of the bare metal, then stick Eternabond tape on top of it (that **** is awesome - it fixes RV roofs really well). Technically, Eternabond is for rubber roofs, but it sticks to metal just as well.

Option 2 it is

Gotta work with what I got. what you describe is pretty much what i figured. Never heard of the Eternabond but if that's what you suggest, then that's what it will be.

Thank You Leeann for the link. I too had not heard of that stuff. I haven't pulled those trim strips off yet, I may do that this spring, as I've been trying to figure out why the middle of my van floor is wet. This is especially true right in front of the sliding door, as I used to get wet knees crawling in (still do).

No water in the problem area after a day of rain!
So that area where i put the tape is definitely the cause of that major persistent leak.

But now I gotta figure out what's up with all this condensation on the roof

If the van was leaking recently, you probably still have a lot of moisture in there. I would warm it up and use some damp-rid.

I saw a van in the junkyard that had holes like that. I’ve never had reason to pull that rubber on any of mine and assumed they were factory, but that van didn’t have a rack. Someone else had already pulled it. I’m wondering now if it was an aftermarket rack, and this van had the same aftermarket rack on it that someone pulled and put the factory rack in its place without sealing up the holes.

That condensation is because there is a ton on moisture still in the van. If the carpet/padding got wet, it's best to remove and hang them to dry, otherwise they will take just shy of forever to dry out.

Rather than silicone, you might consider using the following, I chose to use "Black Polyurethane Roof and Flashing Sealant" based on a jeep thread where they were addressing leaking windshields.

If you chose this, but a better caulking gun, this stuff comes out a bit tough so a cheap gun is worthless, I think I paid 15USD for a better gun, and it was worth every penny.
