Clifford The Big Red 98 AWD Safari

Postby whiteroom [OP] » April 4th 2020, 9:29am

Meet Clifford. Picked this 98 AWD Safari up from a friend in Calgary last summer and drove it down to Bend. Previous owner got the 24" hightop from Fiberine, a 5" lift from overland vans, bilstein suspension, swivel passenger seat, and built out the interior.

Been lurking this forum since, and its been invaluable for everything from wheel/tire advice to alternator replacement guides, cladding deletes, bumper/fog light mods, reducing the annoying key in alarm, and all sorts of other minor issues. Huge shoutout to everyone on here that has unknowingly helped me in my journey to take this already sweet build to the next level.

I've added the roofbox, ladder, fog light bars, a loft bed platform, replaced the wheels/tires/brakes/steering rods/fuel pump/alternator/probably forgetting some things. Constantly a work in progress - next orders of business are a trifold mattress for the loft platform, summer AT tires, RTIC cooler to replace the previous owner's family soccer cooler from the 90s, and upgrading the front bumper to a full on bambi basher.

current status:

100848

the evening I picked it up:

100858

interior build:

100852
100854

Welcome to the registered user side!

That's a really nice topper, and since I've recently inquired with Fiberine, I'm going to ask for a favor if you're game. My 1995 has the pressed roof gutters, and if your 98 does too, I'd like to see how Fiberine addresses that. Is there a 2-3" overhang or does the topper extend to and seal around the outside edge? A good place for me to see what I need to know would be close-up anywhere along either side, and looking forward at the rear corners preferably with the liftgate up. I'd really appreciate it if you have the time to indulge me this request.

The overhang has proven itself problematic, as the PO(s) didn't keep the gutters free of debris. If this is how your clifford is setup, and it hadn't already occurred to you, you'll want this info. I have seepage inside and I suspect rot in a place i can't get to.

My copy of Clifford The Big Red Dog was well-worn by the time I outgrew it.

Welcome White, Clifford and Fiberine - good Timing.
Well, after all... what would Banacek say ?... “I'd like to get The Team - Face, BA, Howlin' and the Spousal Unit back together, go out West, buy Brandon's / CFM's Van and drive it down the West Coast - see our beloved Big Trees and AS.com Members.”

Thanks Mike! It's comically tall w/ the lift and box up top. My goal was a comfy basecamp for skiing/biking/camping trips and not a full on wheeling rig, so I'm fine with trading offroad performance for standing room.

Yep, that was me! Thought I was going to tip on the way into the pit lmao. Such a cool event, and I remember seeing your rig there - definitely more deserving of the name. Clifford the big maroon and white dog just doesn't have the same ring to it. Are you coming back out for this years event if everything is back to normal by then?

thank you VERY much for taking the time. It looks possible you have the overhang plus outer sealant. An inside "before" pic would clear that up, but looking at these pics i'm convinced to try and seal my perimeter and avoid a $4k new top adventure.

Allow me to return the favor. The rear corners look a lot like mine did, albeit a few years younger. I found a finger size rusty hole, under some caulking, at the end of each gutter by the drip rail. The entire ass-end, inside and out, was a muddy mess. I "fixed" the holes with tape and liquid rubber, and I've been working with Steele Rubber Products to perfect their new line of parts for our vans, with pretty good results so far.

Hit the front/rear bumpers and grill with rustoleum bedliner earlier this week, very stoked on how it came out! Think I might hit the lower doors and fender trim lines too so it's a cohesive wraparound layer, but that's a project for another day.

Thanks man! Hit the lower panels with bedliner last week to complete the wraparound layer, very happy with how it turned out.

Also, used it as a shuttle rig for the first time – we swapped a friends rack on so we had 4 bikes on the back and 2 bikes + 6 people inside lol
