This Oaf's Adventure With His Astro

Postby AstroOafAdventurer [OP] » August 19th 2020, 9:49pm

Hey hey AstroSafari.com!
I'm a relatively new member having recently purchased my 1997 Astro conversion van with 62k miles.
I went to this van from a 2004 Honda Odyssey with 205k miles, and so far really like my Astro.
My plans are to get all, or most, the small things worked out, bring everything up current maintenance wise, and then gut and camperize.
I went to a local pick a part this morning and got a temp and fan control knob along with a sliding door window catch lever.
After, I took it in for a pre-purchase inspection which found the following:
Driver's front window (known)
No AC (Will diagnose according to FSM to determine/verify low freon, I added 2 Wally World cans but still no clutch engagement)
Air blows out defrost only (have already found rotted vacuum line for control)
Slight leaks in rear pinion seal, rear main seal, and oil cooler lines (no puddles under vehicle, will prob look at oil cooler lines)
Battery hold down missing (battery tray is fairly rusted too, will look for when I go to pick a part again)
Headlamps cloudy (would like to replace with better aftermarket headlights anyway)
EVAP monitor not ready (no clue how they arrived at this, no CEL or codes, WTF is this?!)

First order of business is getting the window working, and the air duct control.
I have replacement motors and vacuum line part en route for delivery tomorrow.

Pics coming soon...

In the meantime, here's some back story on the van.
I bought it from a guy down the street, which I'm not sure how long he owned but I'm guessing not long as he hadn't transferred the title yet.
He lives in a townhouse and moved it weekly for parking, he told me the guy he got from, he'd done some work for a few years back and had asked him about the van as it was sitting on the street. He was told it was the guys father's van, and he was keeping it for it sentimentality.
So 5 years later, the guy calls the guy I bought it from and asked if he wanted it, and he came and got it.
From there, the PO indicated he'd wanted to start using it as a family vehicle but had another car or something and ended up listing it for sale. I think his wife had some prompting in this...

It certainly runs like a van with only 62k miles, but things inside make me think some hellions had been on the loose, missing knobs, missing/loose screws etc.

I started removing the interior, I had initially planned on gutting it, but after starting, being I have a conversion van already, I don't have the plastic interior pieces like other passenger vans.
I will strip out the high top to install a vent, and it won't be insulated or covered as I like hearing rain.
After removing parts I'm thinking I'll leave the major part of it alone, probably even the carpeting. I don't know how well they insulate before building them out, but the cloth has a foam backing and has minimal intrusion to the interior.
I like the area overhead in the cockpit, makes for a nice storage shelf.
Here's what I've cleared so far, next will be more the rear and liner.

I started painting the inside of the high top with Kilz primer and should be finishing it up today, it's got three coats. I'm no painter, but I'm wondering if I can leave it the primer, or should I put a coat of paint on it?

I also got my MaxxFan Deluxe 5100K model, Amazon had an open box I nabbed for $250 and doesn't look to have been opened at all.
I made a template for marking where to cut in the roof.

Further also, I installed my dutch seal:

You can just leave it primer if you want, won't hurt anything.

And now $229, that was the final straw, I was still able to return mine and just got back from dropping it at Kohls.
However, for just $43 more I can get a 7500K for $298, that's the deluxe deluxe version with auto open and remote.

I would go for the mid model again, but I decided i want to go with smoke, and it's $294

Also, I do believe these wired remotes will work with the Deluxe models:
