1987 Astro Quigley v-8 build

Postby Kps396 [OP] » December 5th 2020, 2:55pm

This will be the start of the build I have been working on during this covid nightmare ! I purchased the van 3 years ago from a guy on long island .I didn’t even know Quigley built a Astro but they tell me under 20 were built . It came with the original paperwork so I was happy about that . Here is a pic of the paperwork and will start posting pictures from the beginning of the restoration / build . Sorry about the crooked pictures I am told if you click on them they turn !

Welcome aboard! There was a guy a few blocks away from me that had one, he sold it some years ago. He was here, briefly.

Yep it might of been this van he posted a few questions around 3-4 years ago , was a dirt bike hauler , sea kayak carrier van but no rust . Had about 30 years of fluid film on everything underneath . A hot power washing revealed fresh clean metal.

Great Pics - Thank You very much - always wanted to see how the axle and susp. went together.
That Spring reminds of the RWD vs AWD discussion a while back.

Nice to Finally get to see some of the Working Gear and I am sure that everyone here that's into 4X4s would appreciate ANY pics of the underside.

Again, Thanks!

We’re going to jump inside the van because the previous work got her driving pretty tight and motor was running pretty good with 150 k on the clock . I do like a good running 4.3.

I forgot this one , out front axel parts all new and old parts cleaned up . The Dana 44 was custom spec from Quigley and has all Ford outer stuff .

Here I pulled headliner due to it being so dirty I needed a shower after sitting inside , nasty smelly carpet was glued to walls and floor . I tossed the seats in a dumpster also . Start of insulation going in .

Rear view . The measurement side to side is 68 inches so I sleep on a angel and the center is removable for long stuff. At this point I wanted to add some new shocks and get back to the underside . I drove the van like this for a few months till it got real hot and it was time to look into the a/c not working . That’s it for now .

I to would love to see how the front end is set up, did it start as an AWD frame or is it custom?

Any idea what the front differential is from? I remember someone posting it previously, but I don't think I saved it.

Looks like a pretty easy mod if you are handy with a grinder and a welder :)

The frt axel was custom spec from Quigley , but it’s just a driver side drop like a 78-79 bronco , would be pretty easy to copy the brackets etc .

Probably was "A TAD" more involved than that.

So... someone familiar w/ that Gen, late 70s/'78/'79 Ford 4WD Products should recognize what's been used and addded - like the trailing arm setup maybe ?

Thanks so much for the Pics !!
