Bad Astro Too...

Postby Ksmith [OP] » October 31st 2012, 3:04am

Hello all, I posted a question a couple of months ago about the swapability of parts from a '98 to '96 Astro. I ended up buying the '96 AWD (Bad Astro Too) that only has 64,000 miles on it to replace my '98 AWD (One Bad Astro) with 179,000 miles. Here are the comparison pictures... I just ordered Overland's 2 inch lift and I'll raise the front end another inch with the torshion bars to level the truck. I plan on some kind of custom paint, just don't know for sure what yet. Maybe real fire, if not flames or some large graphics.

Nice find on the '96! It's amazing how many low miles Astro's are out there for cheap!
The '98 looks HUGE compared to the '96! I know it's just an optical illusion but it just looks bigger. Must be the brite paint.

Hey, you got a side view of those flames? Those front flames are just what I was envisioning for mine (except they'd be maroon instead of orangish). And you say swapping stuff over, you trashing the '98 after? If so, you swapping the raised roof too?

Nice looking vans there.

Thanks guy's. I measured the side mirrors, my old van is 3 1/2" taller than the new one. The top ads a lot of volume too though, I've had guy's think it was a full size van because it is so tall. I don't think I'm going to swap the top. I'm hoping to run the flamed van during the winter. It's at my mechanics right now looking at an issue with the ABS. If it's not too much money I'll fix it and run it. The new van has virtually NO rust! I hope to keep it that way. I want the new one to run 10 years for me. Here is a side shot of the van's flames. The new one may match it, I haven't decided yet.

Finally got started with this project. The flamed Astro started grinding when I applied the brakes, so I donated it before the first of the year for tax purposes. This new van is soooo clean. No rust at all...

I striped all the stripes off, still need to remove the adhesive and buff the paint.
IMG_9336.jpg

Removed old man running boards, installed a 2 inch lift on the front and back, then cranked the torsion bars another inch. Then installed over-sized tires mounted on polished aluminum rims, HID head lights and tail lights, black out the turn signals... I had to order a new lower grill. I am very frustrated, I ordered a powder coated billet grill, and the lower grill doesn't fit at all. I hope the supplier can figure it out because I think it will look really nice...
IMG_9353.jpg

I installed an air horn, and an auga horn too.

Just curious - what type of compressor and tank setup did you use for the airhorns? Where did you mount them?

I have a set of Bully horns I'm going to put on mine in the Spring. Thinking about putting the compressor and a tank inside in the back behind the trim panels and running the air line under the van to the front.

Don, the horn is a Wolo electric unit. There is a little compressor that I installed just behind the radiator on the front support. I thought about getting a train horn, but decided I didn't have room for everything.

Thanks Kurt, I'm familiar with those. The Bully Airhorn takes much more air - so I am going to have to do a small air tank and higher PSI compressor. Love your van in Black. Makes me want to repaint.....

Where did you buy your head and tail lights from? I've been considering doing a lighting upgrade, but I don't want to buy something I'll end up regretting because of poor quality ( such as plastic lenses that get scratched up too easily ).

Van looks really nice right now though. That's the nice thing about black...just black out everything and it looks good. A little harder with a White van like mine...

Thanks guy's I really like how this truck is shaping up. The head lights and tail lights came from CARiD.com and are made by "Syder." I am very happy with them. I put "blue" lights in the head lights. There are "halos" around both headlights too. They turn on with the running lights. I also put a turn signal in the headlights. The halos are not bright enough to see in the day time but can be seen at dusk. They also make a "chrome" finished head lights. The tail lights are blacked out too.

I'm really thinking about "real fire" or some very subtle colored pinstripes.

I added this to the rear for the kids. It's a standard 19" TV that I made a stand for that pivots from the rear to the front. The passenger can start the movie, and swing the TV to the back for the kids to watch. When we aren't on vacation, the TV will be in our Kitchen...

We went to Tennessee to visit Gary Will the past week. Gary taught me how to pinstripe and letter. I started working for him 17 years ago when I was 19 years old. I've never had him stripe a vehicle, so I asked him to stripe the hood on the new van. I'm going to clear coat it this summer, and when I sell this van, I'll pull the hood and dislay it in the shop. I learned SO much from Gary... I'm very honored to have his work on my truck.

My son, Eli was mesmerized by Gary painting. I was 4 or 5 when I first saw him stripe and letter. I've been having fun with paint ever since. Very thankfull for this trip.

Thanks everyone, she's only going to be stealth for a little while... I haven't figured out what I'm going to do, but something is on the way. ;)

Gary is truly a master. One of the best in the Metro Detroit area. He has stage 4 cancer now, so I wanted to have some striping of his on my van.

I'm in south east Michigan, I live just south of Ann Arbor, and my shop is south of Monroe. I build half scale tractors out of my shop at my parents farm. I've sent tractors all over the country, and even sent some parts to Denmark. I started lettering and pinstriping ( www.BrushfireDesign.BlogSpot.com ) 17 years ago when I started working for Gary, but this second business ( www.TheLittleTractorCo.com ) has really taken off, so I'm not promoting the lettering so much. I'm taking care of current customers, but not really looking for more work.

I'll post some more pictures when I figure out what I'm doing...

Thanks again,
Kurt
