2000 Cargo Van interior

Postby Harleybowtie [OP] » August 10th 2013, 2:17am

Picked up my 2000 Astro 2wd cargo van about eight weeks ago. It's a creampuff with 70K miles. I stripped out the shelves & bulkhead (sold it on Craigslist) The noise of a bare metal van was giving me headaches. I decided to put self adhesive sound deadener on all the flat surfaces both walls and roof. Over that I installed some bubble wrap (kind of) insulation. In the roof I added a layer of carpet padding. I cut the roof for a crank up vent. I chose the smaller 9.5" instead of the 14" so I wouldn't have to cut two roof struts. I used 1/8" Masonite to make the panels and glued indoor/outdoor carpeting on. I mounted the panels with # 6 sheet metal screws.

Moving on to the walls I used craft paper to make a template. It makes cutting the Masonite easier, and more accurate. I ran the carpet a few inches past the vertical on the walls. The stock plastic corners had to be trimmed a little but they work well. On the walls I added styrofoam in the deep pockets. I made some wheel well covers out of 5/8" pressboard. They hide the jack, lug wrench, some tools, etc. Covered them with the same in/out carpet.

Thinking outside the box I got a length of 3" PVC and ripped it into thirds. Cutting them to length I wrapped 'em in the carpet and screwed them up with # 8 screws.
On the side door post I used a heat gun and clamps to get the shape I needed. I slipped a 14" piece of 1/4" X 1.5" steel into the post, secured by 1/4" -20 button heads. I drilled & tapped the holes for the D-ring tie down too. That thing's going nowhere.

Weight wise I think it's still lighter than it was with the bulkhead and tool box and shelves. The insulation weighs hardly anything. Three sheets of 4' X 8' 1/8" Masonite and less than one full sheet of 5/8" pressboard were the heaviest additions. The carpet is very light weight recycled plastic milk & water bottles. The PVC is also light weight. I'd guess total weight is under 175 lbs. As for cost, it's been a running project so I haven't totaled up the cost but I'd guess in the $350 dollar range. I'm going to take the drivers side panel off to reinforce the stamped steel structure with a piece of 1/4" X 1.5" steel bar stock to mount another D-ring tie down. This van is my antique bike hauler. When I do the retro fit I'll take more pix. When it's done I'll get shots of the bike loaded inside.
Thanks for the positive comments.

Took the drivers side panel off to retro fit the reinforcing steel for the hard point tie down. 1 1/2" X 1/4" steel bar stock, bent to the contour of the wall rib. 16" long, drilled & tapped.
Covered the gas fill bump w/carpeting too. That's a wrap.

Good job - gives me idea on how to convert my passenger van into a camper with saving tons of space and not looking very ugly. :)

I've got a '62 panhead that fits like a glove.
Check out my set up.
https://www.astrosafari.com/gallery/album.php?album_id=1698

And here are the rear speakers. I made angled boxes that attach to the front ends of the wheel well covers with 1/4" studs and wingnuts accessible from inside the wheelwell covers. The 6" X 9" JBL's are angled up and in to intersect the sound at ear level in the front seats. With JBL's in the doors the sound is impressive coming from the Alpine receiver. The speakers have extra wire to enable them to be put outside in camping situations.

Thanks but I'm glad I'm almost done with mine. I tried not to lose any hauling capability by keeping the floor clear of any permanent add ons. I have a Coleman Quickbed that fits right in. Just blow it up and relax. I did an expansion for base camp. Check out this thread, Scroll down.
