2002 LS Astro

Postby codydaniels [OP] » October 3rd 2015, 12:36pm

Here is my 02 LS. I purchased it from the 2nd owner who had bought it for his disabled wife. He put new calipers, rotors, master cyl, booster, a/c sys, Monroe shocks, flushed all fluids and some other things. Then found that his wife could not climb up into it comfortably. So I got it fairly cheap with 170k miles on it. The original owner must have kept it inside because the paint is in excellent shape. Everyone in Florida I have seen has paint that is cracked or peeling unless it has been repainted. When I got it it had been stored under an Oak tree so it was covered in leaves pollen and a good layer of dirt, the inside was infested with sugar ants. Now that it's cleaned up it looks great.

I hate running boards but mine came with them. I went to the local u-pull salvage yard last week and found the parts to swap over to a non running board version. I could not believe how many nuts, bolts and brackets Chevrolet used to put these running boards on with. I would bet you could hang the thing by those boards. Next will be some paint touch up. Then hopefully some new wheels. I have also removed all of the pin-striping and emblems from it. I think it looks a lot cleaner without them.

Today I was able to repaint the new side cladding and front bumper. Now it looks pretty good to me.

A couple weeks ago while looking for wheels I found a set I could not refuse buying. They were cheep enough that I could sell them for a profit if I did not use them on my van. The fronts are 18x8 and the rears are 18x10. They are from a 2011 Carrera. I know they are not Chevy wheels but they have a large offset so that with adapters they fit correctly in the wheel well. The adapters were made 1 3/4 wide to get the fit I wanted and have plenty off beef so there will be no issues down the road. Hopefully one day I can lower it a couple inches.

Funny thing about the running boards , i am doing the oposite and instaling them , if you dont lik em you dont lik em , i liked your van better before ,but that dont matter as long as its the way you like it , nice wheels you aint gonna get porshe handling with that thing tho :)

Looks way better without the running board's, and the paint came out nice. Is kind of funny the 18's look small in the photo's at stock ride height.

Well I picked up a set of Bell Tech 2" spindles and a DJM flip kit from a guy on craigslist. Not sure if I want to go 2 or 3 inches yet. But for now my Astro is in the body shop because some 19 year old kid in a charger hit my front pass fender last week then ran. Fortunately I got his tag and he was found and given some tickets for reckless driving and for causing an accident. Nothing major just a crease in the fender and some scuffing of the bumper but it still sucks. Do they still have the firing squad???

I personally think a Hit and Run should be mandatory jail time.

My wife and I were rear-ended in about 2008 or 2009. The guy got out of his truck and when he saw I was on the phone with 911 he jumped back in and took off. Same deal - I read his tag number off to the dispatcher 3 times before he got out of my sight. He hid from the police for weeks. Once I got his name from the tag information, I was able to identify him from a picture in the local paper. He had been featured in an article about a year before as an aspiring MMA fighter. You shouldn't put your picture in the paper if you are a criminal. I sent the police his picture wuth a positive ID and they picked him up about a week later.

He didn't get jail time, but it did cost his insurance company some bucks to settle the deal. Hopefully it at least hit him in the wallet on future insurance premiums. I figure he had come from a bar nearby and had been drinking, but there was no way to prove that with him not being found immediately.

I wish. I also wish that people would understand that leaving the scene of an accident is a thousand times worse than the accident itself and would stop pulling that ****.

Glad you got his tag and they caught his stupid ***....

Thanks guys

Best thing about it was it was witnessed by 14 deputies on a training day. Unfortunately they could not chase him. But he was caught. Amazingly his insurance company is claiming full responsibility for the damage.

I don't think they had a choice.

That's awesome about the witnesses :)

I got it back from the body shop last week and you can not tell where it was hit or that it has been painted. They did the best paint match I could have hoped for. Today I lowered it. The front is the Bell Tech 2" spindles. The rear is a DJM flip kit. The front was very easy to do but the back was not as easy, the kit cam with extra bolts and new front hangars that seemed to be exact duplicates of the originals. I really like the way it looks but the rear is lower than the front. Guess I'm getting air shocks soon. What a difference from when I first bought it.
