1990 Provan Tiger XL (Astro)

Postby kevinfin [OP] » April 4th 2016, 5:02am

Hi All- Sharing a link to some pictures of my rebuild project of a 1990 Provan Tiger XL. I gutted about 90% of its interior and then rebuilt most of it better than new. I had help with some of the mechanical aspects (it was poorly converted to 4x4 by a previous owner, and that had to be redone completely), solar/battery bank design as well as help reinforcing the sub-frame, etc. It's made to be completely off-grid: 400w solar, lithium battery bank, composting toilet, super insulated, LED lighting, etc. This is not an overlander type of vehicle -- more like a glamper. The 4x4 is just for plowing through snow in the winter (I take it on ski trips).

I should have taken more pics of the progress as I was going along, but I was just trying to get it done. Took over a year and way too much $$$.

Here are the pics: https://www.flickr.com/gp/[email protected]/g9Lp6P

Cheers, Kevin

Just WOW. Going from a stock 2WD to a proper 4WD conversion, about what would that run? I'd love to plow through some snow on a ski trip in the future, but with RWD forget about it.

Very nice job. Did you glue the fiber reinforced board to the walls in the bathroom? I noticed something like plug covers on the wall, maybe covering screws?

cdlenfert wrote:Going from a stock 2WD to a proper 4WD conversion, about what would that run?
Hey cdlenfert -- the rig was converted to 4X4 before I got it but it was a shot job. We put in a cross-bar to hold the new transfer case, replace the drive shaft, extended frame near the bumper to reinforce the front-end where the leaf springs meet, etc. I was told by several mechanics that the vehicle wasn't safe. No one would touch it. It took quite awhile to find someone show was creative and up for the challenge (Boulder Offroad). It's hard to say how much it would cost because there are so many variables and I didn't have to cut anything out, plus we kept the axle and such. In any case, you may want to consider seeking out a AWD version instead. It was one hell of a commitment.

Hey Ken - The fiberglass board was glue and sealed with 3M 5200. Initially, I used small screws to hold it and form to the concur, but didn't like the way it looked, so I cut out those circles you see and covered up the holes. It was a messy job trying too get it all tight and sealed. If I wasn't so rushed, I would have made it cleaner. The upside is that the board won't ever budge and I'll never need to use caulk. Even if something leaked, it would have to get past the green foam insulation behind it and what little wood is backing it has been water sealed. Complete overkill.

By the way, short of dropping a V-8 into the rig, any suggestions on how to get the most from the engine without stressing it? I'm obviously not trying to win any races, but any added horses might help when going over the mountain passes out here. I'm topping out at 35 mph on most of them, which is fairly good considering the weight I'm carrying.

I picked up two of the FRP panels today and that is my next project. With a shorter GT version my walls won't be as tall.
I also notice those mountain passes and in an effort to get a little more air in the engine at higher elevations I altered my intake. The seat of the pants dyno says it helped but not as much as I would like. I want to keep working on that and see if I can get the snorkel to the cowl where there is more air pressure. Check out your point of entry for the intake, mine was really small.

Probably not Kevin. We have been thinking of going for just part of it but the wife had foot surgery 5 weeks ago and still isn't walking. She is hoping for a walking boot/cast on Monday. I enjoy the pictures from the group and I understand they are going to have a few sessions this year that I think would be interesting.
Now that you are done, or about done I'll throw something else at you. I read an article last week while it was snowing where the fellow ran a line (with a filter) into the gray tank and hooked it to a pump so he could use gray water as a source for the stool. Our gray tank fills fast even with Navy showers. I think I'll add it to my long list of "to do" projects.
Besides adding the plastic to the bathroom walls I'm also changing my vent pipe and it will now come out on the side near the top. I have it with a removable cap and I can put a hose in the vent to aid in flushing the tanks. The old vent had to slide and extend as the top went up and I didn't think it sealed well enough. The 2004/05 Tiger GT's changed to that design.

Best to your wife. I've recovered from a couple of near fatalities and know what its like to be on the mend. I really like the idea of using the gray water to flush. When I gutted my tanks I noticed that it seemed as though, over the years, some black water residue made its way into the grey tank since they shared the same outlet portal. If it was me, I may have a completely separate outlet for portal each tank and really sanitize that grey water tank before running anything back for recycled use. Another alternative is a composting toilet. I'm still new to it myself, but I have to say it's really easy. In fact, for me, it's a lot cleaner and less disgusting than sewage. Nature's Own is what I use --- they are simple, a little pricey, but very well-made. As far as smell, there is NONE. The design diverts the urine to a separate tank which you dump while the rest is composting. This frees up your water for other uses as well.

If you ever go to sell this thing please let me know!

I have a call in to to Boulder Off Road Van to talk about converting my 1990 GT RWD to a 4x4. I'm aware that the the sub-frame swap makes it costly but my van is really nice with a brand new pop top liner. Its impossible to find an AWD tiger- and when you do there so damn expensive that it might even out!

BTW, thats the coolest one I've ever seen!

Why would it be expensive? you should be able to find an AWD first gen astro or safari relatively cheap. You don't need a runner so it shouldn't cost top dollar.

According to those who have done it, or know how to do it in theory, its all in the labor and swapping parts from the AWD isn't exactly 'plug & play.' Still researching, getting lots of different answers. I suppose it would be cheap if I was a mechanic and had a lift and place to work.
