A good deal on 4 guage wire for Aux battery install

A good deal on 4 guage wire for Aux battery install

Postby bunce1260 [OP] » January 6th 2016, 7:45am

I paid nearly twice this for 2, 12ft sets of jumper cables.

No affiliation.

I'm not sure if it's 25ft like the title says or 20ft like the picture says. Either way that's pretty cheap.

I'm always wary of the cheap stuff. Often it's not actual gauge correct and often it's not 100% copper. Sometimes they use aluminum mixed in or you just plain get shorted on copper in the diameter. So you might think you're getting 4ga when really it something more like 6ga. Copper is not cheap and you better believe if the price is surprisingly low....you're not getting the real deal. I would not buy it unless it was American made with standards or had raving reviews by knowledgeable folks.

from years of experience working with electrical i couldn't agree more with what 97cargocrawler had to say. one of the things about the standards of jumper cables is they are for intermittent use, so they often don't conform UL wiring standards. i'd also question the quality of wire from big box stores if it's not a popular brand also carried by electrical or welding shops.

I don't see where it says copper anywhere except for the copper plated jaws. Wire could be aluminum or Cu plated aluminum.

You can get leftovers from marine installers, good wire at a cheap price, shop around.
