Drivers grab handle? A pillar

Drivers grab handle? A pillar

Postby nonhog [OP] » January 18th 2018, 11:04pm

Never noticed one yet haven't looked too hard. Typical searches show nothing. My knee is trashed and thinking how the van seating style is nicer than the car with a knee that wont bend.
I can pull myself up on the RH grab handle which works great since its my RH knee that is messed up.
Ergonomics don't play as well on the LH side. My luck. Probably too crippled to fab something anyway.
Curious..... and bored, Netflix is getting old fast. :banghead:

I think the General assumed that you would be using the steering wheel to pull yourself in. If you grabbed a right side handle it shouldn't be to hard to fab it into the other side. Making it look good, or like it belongs will be the trickier part

I am more along the lines of, if it works great, then it looks great.

Much the same reason I got my '88 Astro. I had a bad left knee and the astro was just easier to get in and out of vs dropping down into a car. My method for driver side entry was back to the seat. Use good leg in step well to push up with. Hands braced on A&B pillars.

The A-pillar is plenty strong and will handle the stress of adding a grab handle with no problems. Like TnB mentioned you can easily grab either passenger or slider grab handles and mount them will minimal effort. Just make sure you use a solid mounting fastener like a rivnut or jacknut.

And just to throw and idea at you. Handles on both A&B pillars work extremely well. You could even add one across the top if need to help pull yourself up with.

Thanks guys!
I'm hoping my knee will get better w/o surgery. Funny thing is I don't feel well enough to work on this project and by the time I do I may not need it?
I will follow through as my wife might drive it on a rare occasion. She is little. :D

I would stay away from a rivnut for this particular use. they are good for mounting stuff to other stuff, but if someone is going to be yanking on it a couple of times ever day I don't think they will last in sheet metal. I suggest a plusnut instead

I will peal the plastic away from the pillar and above the door on my 1999 Astro donor van and see if the factory has added threaded holes for a grab handle some times assembly line even leaves dimples for future drilling for handles and such. If so I'll take photo of bare metal pillar. If there is threaded holes I can send the right handle for you to use maybe adapt it?? remember "up with the good down with the weak"

I think I saw pics of a one off RH drive conversion someone was working on once. If I didn't imagine it, I saw it here. Other than that one I don't believe they exist. I also noticed today for the the first time that Ford vans have a driver side grab handle. At least my buddy's work van has one.

Barney, did you ever investigate that pillar? I'm looking into installing one as well. Climbing in with a sore back after work can be less than pleasant.

Still haven't gotten around to this. Haven't had time to mess around at PNP. Anyone have a pic of the A pillar without the molding? Could really use a grab handle mod.
