2nd Gen Seats and Seatbelts into 1st Gen Van?

2nd Gen Seats and Seatbelts into 1st Gen Van?

Postby Huckleberry [OP] » February 1st 2018, 3:39am

I've read several topics on this, but haven't found anything definitive.
I want to swap out the rear benches in my '92 with
some nice benches with headrests out of a 2002.
I know the seats will lock in, but what are the seatbelt considerations?
Thanks in advance!

You have to get the seatbelt set from the van the seats come from. And put everything in your van they are different. That means the parts that bolt to the inside of the van. Not just the parts attached to the seats. I had 2000 something seats in my 94 for a while.

So I bought the benches out of an '02 for $100.
Pretty nice seats.
They recline, have two headrests and four armrests per bench,
and both have a fold-down center with cup-holders and a tray.
Dropped right in.
Now I have a new problem.
I removed the seatbelts from the donor van, but I didn't know
not to let them retract all the way, and now they're locked up.
All of them.
Anyone ever dealt with this?

most seat belts only unlock when mounted or oriented like they would be in there original location
this is so they lock when you roll over or are on the side

Thanks for the quick reply.
I now know more about seat belts than I ever wanted to.
The ball-bearing gizmo is the reason they only unlock when level.
Once I manually retracted the pawl from the gear, the belt unrolled like butter.
Pulled it all the way out and tied a knot in it.
One down, three to go.
I will win this fight!

I did the same thing your doing and that chevymaher did, sounds like the same type of seats that you described. He’s right you have to modify the seat belts. It’s been awhile but if I recall correctly I took the little box enclosing the seatbelt from the gen 1 seats and attached to the frame of the gen 2 seats in the same relative position. I believe the seat next to the sliding door will work without modification. I ended up giving the seats away because I never used them, else I would send pics.

I'm gonna try to anchor the belts to the van floor instead of the seats,
because the later models' belts stay in the van when the seats are removed.
If I anchor the new belts to the seats, I won't be able to take
the seats out without unbolting the seatbelts from their hangers.
