Rubber Mats To Cover Entire Rear For Astro Van Camper

Rubber Mats To Cover Entire Rear For Astro Van Camper

Postby MtAstro [OP] » March 22nd 2018, 4:57pm

I am in the process of converting my 2002 Astro Van into a little camper, and I don't want the area carpeted. Has anyone here heard of full rubber mats for the rear of the Astro? Thanks much everyone.

Tractor supply, horse stall mats

You could get the rubber mats that comes in the Cargo vans from a junk yard.

You can also take a look at rubber tiles, mine have held up great, easy to clean etc., I found a good deal years ago but they can be pricey.

these work great! harbor freight occasionally has a four pack on sale for $10.

I like them because they also insulate well, their soft (foam rubber), and easy to replace if one gets tore up or something.

edit: maybe yours are actually rubber? the ones I use are foam rubber, cushy soft but not good for heavy equipment sliding in and out. perfect for camping though. double them up for more insulation and softness.

Yeah, great idea. That might be the way to go if I can find some durable real rubber ones. I did try the ones from Harbor Freight one time and they were too flimsy for the project I was doing. I'll look for some rubber ones.
Thanks guys.

i just installed a Westin 50-6325 universal bed mat. its 72"x96" and about 3/8" thick. its definitely heavy duty, weighs 75 pounds. i made a template and cut it with a utility knife. It did smell like a tire store for a couple weeks till the smell went away.

That looks like another good option. I'll be checking that out also. It looks nice too being one piece. Good job.

I did sheet vinyl in the back of mine. It's over 3/4" plywood over 3/4" polyiso. Super cheap - Home Depot sells 6x8 sheet vinyl remnants for 25 bucks. I used the old carpet as a template to rough cut it to shape.

@MtAstro did your floor arrive and was it a good fit? I'm looking for exactly the same thing.

I also found this as an option:

https://www.americanvan.com/universal-m ... escription

I'm also talking to a Hexomat supplier who says they supply 4x full mats for the Astro, to cover 1.) both front wells, 2.) 2nd row, 3.) 3rd row, and 4.) cargo area.

This may be a tidy solution but will be more expensive. Waiting on more info and pictures of installed mats from the dealer...

Let me know about the hexomat. I’d like something for the front.

Pics or it didn't happen @MtAstro!

Sounds like a sweet solution. May go down that route myself.

I heard back from the Hexomat guy. While they do make 4 sets of mats for the Astro, they're specifically foot mats, so there are gaps of carpet in between.

I've bought the front one piece mat that fills both driver and passenger footwells, and is joined across the middle. Should look something like the attached pic.

I'm now looking for a single piece to lay in the rest of the van where the trimming and custom fitting won't be so fiddly.

Just to follow up on this, mine are a hard rubber/plastic, the haror freight ones would never work for my needs. I had plastic bins to hold everything and dragged them all over that floor to get them in and out of the van, without any issue aside from cosmetic scratches. Also spilled plenty of fluids and it was super easy to clean up.

They are fantastic, but I found them online and they now cost waaaay to much for my taste, 75 dollars a case, only 8 tiles to a case, and I am used 3 cases. If yu do something different up front you could get by with 2 cases, but even at 150 it's still a bit much in my opinion, but they last forever! I thought about replacing them since my cutting job was terrible, but now that I see how much it would cost me I will keep the old ones, they last well, and are easy to clean. I think I got them for about 75 bucks total way back in 2011. Booo
