Can I add a back seat to the cargo version of the Astro?

Can I add a back seat to the cargo version of the Astro?

Postby AngryPunk [OP] » February 11th 2019, 12:57am

I'm looking to buy a used Astro for camping. I want the version with no windows. But those don't usually have things in the floor for back seats. Is it hard to add them? If I go to a wrecking yard and buy a back seat will I be able to install it in the cargo version?

You’d have to cut out the pockets for the brackets. Probably simpler to get a seat from a conversion van; those are bolted from underneath.

x2 Conversion van seats are the hot ticket if you don't already have seat mount pockets!

I put bucket seats in a car that came with a bench seat but some states may need to verify its by there legal standards.

I did it. It's not too hard. Cut the brackets out of a parts van and weld them in from the top of the floor.

Definitely one way to do it, but a little bit more complicated than drilling a few holes and bolting conversion seats to the floor.

Ok. Thanks guys. Very impressed with the rapid and thorough responses on this forum.

Apologies but what does "Conversion" seats mean? And does this mean they are hard to find? I don't have a welder. Is there an easier way?

Nope, not hard to find at all. Most conversion van companies start with cargo vans and add their own seats. Instead of being application specific, they simply bolt into the flat floor wherever you want to put them. Some fold down into beds, etc.

In my conversion van, I bolted down front seats from out old Villager minivan. The bases are flat, it worked out well. I used grade 8 hardware and reinforcing plates underneath. There was already a steel plate running across the floor where the upfitters bolted their seats, but those were long gone when I got the van. I used the factory seat belt mounting points to determine where the seats needed to be, and used seatbelts from junkyard Villager/Quest vans to make sure they worked as needed.
