seat to bed set up

seat to bed set up

Postby markmitch [OP] » May 19th 2020, 6:59pm

Anyone here actually slept on one of them seat to bed conversion things? I am contemplating buying a bed/seat from pick n pull for the big Ford e350 we bought for driving to NH. I have a bunch of camper stuff for it such as a sink with holding tank and pump and a two burner propane stove and a folding table so far. Thanks , Mark.

Re: seat to bed set up

Postby Astro Pop » May 19th 2020, 7:45pm

I tried one and then had to modify it to cover up the feel of the three sections. It was very comfortable as a seat but sh***y as a bed. There was an a obvious feel to the gaps between the sections. I had to carry a thick cover to lay across the entire bed when set up. Best advice: get one that kinda looks crappy as a seat but has flat sections that lay down smoothly. If you have the chance lay on it before you buy it.

I think I will build a frame add a mattress to it and be able to store stuff under it instead. I have 2x4's and plywood and a mattress. Thanks for your answer, I have a bad back from Airborne and such so a crappy bed will hurt and possibly ruin our trip.

Agreed, I ended up using a 3 piece 6in memory foam on top of this and it is great (click the pic):

I'm currently looking at how to take the bottom half of my original bench and attach it in a solid way for the seat belts.

Your toughest project this year will probably be which thread / post to use as a guide for your markymark "Back Bed".
Nice to have some room to fool with too!! Gonna' save room for the Astro in there next to the La-Z-Boy?

I have this seat/bed from an RV. It's 6 ft long so it's going down the side. Problem is when it makes out into a bed it damn near fills out the back, there's no really functioning seat belt setup and no room for camping stuff. I can sleep on it in the upright seat position and works for me or fold it out for alot more room. A brown sofa cover and it matches the inside. Just an option. Got one button to fix and build a base this week and I'm ready.

Really wish I had a pic of my folks old van when I was a kid. The middle was a 2 seater bench and the rear was a 3 seater bench in a full size Dodge van. Completely flat cushions, and you could lay the middle and rear down and it made a nice bed. Because the cushions were flat (slabs) there was no problem lying front to back and it felt like a nice bed. No, not a luxury mattress but way better than the tent us kids slept in while camping (folks slept in the van). Should've grabbed the seats out of it, or at least the frames, it ended its life behind the house slowly sinking into the mud and was a rodent haven.

Hey iceberg long time no see, and thanks for replying. I think we may just drive our silverado this trip cause the big ford needs a ton of stuff and we have no idea if would even make the trip cause we have not driven it hardly at all. Whereas the Silverado is on the road and has been used a ton by us and was recently tuned up, had new tires, alignment, steering pump, trans filter and wipers all done to it. All I need to do is replace the front bench seat with a set of buckets and get the AC fixed to drive it across country.

Did that come out of a conversion van? Hoping for something like that but 3/4 size, like a westy build. Seems like unless one is pulled from a VW, you have to get a full size one and modify it.
