Dash carpet and/or removal

Dash carpet and/or removal

Postby AstroOafAdventurer [OP] » August 20th 2020, 1:15pm

So, as with many other of these vans, my dash is cracked, and pulling up along the front edge above the gauge cluster.

Seems survey says the number one answer is a carpet cover, but what do you do with where it's pulling up?
It will cover it but look like poo above the gauges, I've tried tucking it back in, but no go.

I lifted it up a bit and looks like it's flat plastic under. I'd seen a post on here somewhere that someone had just removed his.
It seems quit a bit of work to change, but I did see a crackless dash top at the pick and pull.

Anyone have a picture of the dash w/o the top, or the top itself removed from the dash?
Here's what I'm working with, I'm thinking of cutting it back where it's pulled up, or as much of it as I can and carpeting it. Also a different color of carpet and spray painting my doors switch/tweeter panels to match as they've faded and don't match the rest of the door. I will try the heat gun treatment on them as well since that works a treat on restoring black plastic to it's original color.

Sadly, looking around for a while, I never did find a solution I could live with. I hope someone can help us all with this problem. Many things I liked better about my ol' 92

Yeah, I haven't spent a great deal of time as this is more an aesthetic thing but I do want to do something with it at some point.
Even aside from the crack and pulling up, the color is funked up. And not the good funked up.

I saw somewhere here someone said they'd just removed it and was running bare dash and didn't look too bad. I don't think there was a pic, and may have been gen 1.
I may just see if I can yank/cut it off, hopefully will leave me with a good surface to put a carpet cover on.

I bought a regular dash cover for 29 off ebay. It hasn't fully relaxed, rolled out. I mainly bought it to prevent damage. sun, we got.
