courtesy lights

My ’05 Astro well equipped with lots of options does not have right, left, or stepwell courtesy lights. ’05 shop manual shows these courtesy lights, owner’s manual only mentions ‘interior lamps’. I have dome lights and reading lights, but no courtesy lights. N/A on ’05???

You don't have what look like little vertical vents facing the step wells down about where the seat belts go into the trim panel?

No. Don't have don't have what look like little vertical vents...

I notice my owner's manual uses the term 'dome courtesy lamps'. Must be they eliminated the stepwell lights in later models. Interesting.

Well if you put in a 48 LED dome light, you won't need step well lights. Those things light up the cab and step well extremely well.

I'm pretty sure GM took those stepwell lamps out in 2003.

Re: courtesy lights

Anyone know if the wiring harness connections for the step well lights (removed year 2003 and up) are still there? Thinking of transferring the appropriate panels with the courtesy lights from a 1998 to my 2003...

Thanks!

I've done too many mods to remember all the details, but my best recollection is that I had to run wire to add the step well lights to my '05..... For whatever that's worth.....

Thanks - that pretty well confirms what I thought (they thinned out the wiring harness - probably saved $10 with that redesign).

Just noticed today on the 2003 and up, GM spec'd the horn circuit with only one horn instead of two, as on early generations... and yes, the wiring/connector for the second horn is gone as well - WTF? GM did a lot of cost cutting the last 3 years of production!

I got tired of those little courtesy lights, so I fashioned up some extensions and added white led strips.

What looks like the wiring for a second horn on your 2003 is the connector for the temp sensor for the overhead console, I believe. On the pre-2003 vans, there should be three (3) connectors in that section of the wiring loom (2-horn + 1-temp sensor).

Quick test - swap the plug on your horn and see if it works...

Yep...that other connector is for the temp sensor. My '03 didn't have one and I added it. Plug 'n play...even the wiring harness for the overhead console is there tucked underneath the headliner.
