What have I done??!! AKA: Carpet Install

Postby Big_kid [OP] » December 28th 2008, 5:55am

The weather is supposed to be nice again tomorrow (it BETTER be!) so I started on the carpet install today. I got this far:
Sales Lead Form 003.jpg
This seat's over the tank. NOT gonna drop it for this!

Tomorrow I'll run some wire for future use since I'll have unfettered access, and hopefully lay the new rug over it all. I've run new wire to the existing speaker holes and plan to run another pair for a small amp or inverter down the line.

Has anyone added more lights in the rear cargo area behind the rearmost seat? I picked up a pair of lights from a 93 GMC 1500 conversion, I might put them in. It gets pretty dark back there. I also had the idea of installing a dome light with movable map lights to aim toward the hitch for night time hookups.

Wish me luck!

Yes, it is. I'm hoping to at least have the driver's seat back in today. The toughest part is finding someone to help hold the wrenches while I'm underneath with the impact gun. The 11 year old kid next door wound up helping me last night, I was that much in need. I'll probably end up prying the kids away from the Rock Band for a while this afternoon. Hopefully it won't rain.

I'll keep the pics coming as it progresses.

Well, in between all the distractions and interruptions, I got some work done on the carpet today. The front seats are in, the middle seat I went around is still in, but the others are only laying in place to stay out of the rain. The carpet is down, mostly. There's no glue under it yet, I'm hoping to only glue in patches where I screwed up cutting it. Time will tell if I can get away with it. There's more pics in my gallery.

I went from this:

I messed up in a few places, it's been many many years since I've done this. Hopefully it won't look too bad when I'm done.

Hi Big_kid
Thanks very much for the pictures BK, that looks great, please keep them coming if you can. I have to do mine probably this spring. Mine looks pretty good on the outside, but with 12 years and 500,000 kilometers under her belt she's looking a bit, hmmm, "moldy" on the inside.

I would like to re-carpet mine and put 2 new front seats in it (very hard to find in blue with arm rest and lumbar like my old ones I now have, but still looking). Thanks again BK, I know it isn't easy to take pictures when your in the middle of something you want to finish. :)

Yes.
I'm cheap.

Seriously though- It was a conversion van, there was about 5/8" thick foam glued down already. I added similar thickness carpet padding in the front where there was none. The van was pretty quiet before, except for the big exhaust leak. I drive a 1500 Express all day at work, this is quiet compared to that one.

Word of advice to anyone doing this-
WEAR A DUST MASK!!!!!
I didn't realize what I'd done until I was finished and my sinuses started acting up. Now I'm starting to hack a little and I'm constantly blowing my nose. It's slowing down, but it's still annoying. You don't want to breathe this junk.

Glad to post pics, maybe they'll help someone somehow. If nothing else, it documents the work I'm putting into it.
