Overhead Console Removal

Today at the Pick 'N Pull I was able to remove an overhead console for my Astro. I was not, however able to remove the rivets holding the mounting frame to the roof.

My two questions are:

• Any tricks to getting off those rivets? (The bone yard won't let you have any type of power drills in the yard.)
• Does my Non equipped Overhead Console Astro have the mounting tabs for the console mounting frame already installed?

I recently discovered one of the big yards up in the next county changed to a pull apart yard a few years ago. Their sites say's cordless tools are ok.

Ok, here's what I found. I went to Harbor Freight and bought a set of punches and cold chisels for $10. I've needed those for 25 years, so now I have a set. Yay!

Then I went to the Pick 'N Pull and got out the chisel and beat the snot out of one of the rivets holding the console mounting frame. It came out quickly, but there had to be a better way. Then I took a punch and drove out the middle of the rivet. This made getting the rivet out a whole lot easier...

Then I noted that the mounting frame is pop-riveted to the top's cross-bars. All I'll have to do is to

• open the headliner,
• drill the cross-members,
• pop rivet in the mounting frame and
• mount the console.

Mission accomplished.

Anyone have any creative uses for these stupid straps?

How the heck do you "Secure items with the strap" as found in the owner's manual?

Now if I can just find a hood protector and rear spoiler for cheap!

I bet the strap is to hold a garage door opener.

Fashion something to hold your sun glasses or put the joy stick knob in there for your traffic laser canons targeting system.

Wow... you guy's are killin' me... you're creative if nothing else!

I knew the large strap was for the GDO... however it's that silly little strap that looks more like a cord that I'm flummoxed about. These seem pretty dumb to me.



I'm thinking of modifying the console to house my 2M Ham rig, and maybe a CB.
