Bad odor from A/C vents

I have an odor coming from my vents that smells like the ink out of a pen. Cough, cough.
I''ve removed the defroster vent cover and peered down there but didn't see anything.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what to disassemble to find this offensive smell?
The van is a 2003.

Take the blower motor out. That leaves a pretty good cave you can reach into. See if critters have got in from the outside vent and made nest. Clean it out and spray Lysol in there disinfect it all.

A little off topic but.....

Like the OP, the Lumina had a terrible smell coming from the vents every time I'd select the VENT or AC buttons.

I sprayed the entire contents of a large can of Lysol into the inside intake and the outside windshield vents. Then I lived through a perfume/vomit stench for the next couple of weeks while the Lysol dissipated. The vomit smell remained.

I partially disassembled the heater box and found nothing until one day I opened the trunk to check the air in the spare. I found a gallon of milk that I wife left in the trunk (was in there a good 4 weeks) that during that time had exploded all over the place.

Understanding this is a older thread.

I had a 90's era Buick Road Master that stunk like mice crap every time I turn-on the heat.I tried everything to get rid of the smell nothing worked.I tore apart the dash board and removed all the vent ducks.No signs of a mouse nest any where.I decided to remove the heater motor.Lord behold, I find a dead snake wrapped around, inside the heater motor fan blade with a large mice nest to boot.No alive critters but,stunk very bad of mice pee and everything else.

I removed and cleaned all the vents out and heater motor fan blade.No more mice nest or dead snakes.Six months later the car still stunk of mice pee.I sold the car after that.It stunk to bad for me to be driving it.I wouldn't attempt to pickup a lady in that thing lol

There was one guy here who found a stank pair of panties in his vents from a PO. Personally I prefer to wear the lady garments like a shemagh whilst motoring.
