Transfer case visual inspection tips?

Transfer case visual inspection tips?

Postby Ken2.7 [OP] » March 21st 2018, 11:31pm

I found an S10 2001 transfer case and the round red label says 233C. This is a case only with no plugs or wiring attached. I have no idea of the miles and am wondering if there is any way to turn the splines or see if it’s trashed without pulling it apart. Any tips regarding an inspection would be appreciated.

Sorry, I meant no electrical plugs or wiring. I would prefer a shift lever on the floor but I’m not excited about the Journey kit. Hotwire did a great job recording his build but that is a hard act to follow. If I buy the transfer case ($75) I’ll open it to make sure the chain is decent.

make sure you split the case and see what the insides look like
the 1st one I got had tons of metal inside
the 2nd one looked brand new so I installed new seals and slapped it in
pay special attention to the nylon covered shift forks
if the nylon wears out and cracks it chews up the range fork and will cause issues

there are lots of videos about taking apart the jeep 231 on youtube
it pretty much the same process and was very simple to take apart
