BW4472 fit?

BW4472 fit?

Postby Vandiction [OP] » August 11th 2015, 2:12am

...into an '05? Is it a direct swap from the 136?
Mark mentioned it was the case in the Syclone/Typhoon and I'm finding it changed @1998.
Between that and the NVG149 (Silverado SS) I'm seeking the strongest case to fit the Astro.

It was the AWD case through '98 in all GMs.

It's in my '93 Astro and my '93 Bravada. Is it a tough case? Yep. Is it bulletproof? Nope.

I haven't had a single issue with NP136s in my '99 Safari or '02 Astro. I do have an issue with the BW4472 in my Bravada.

I also doubt it's a direct swap as there were changes in driveshaft heads and transmission outputs over the years. There's at least 2 version of the BW4472 just in GMs.

I haven't found anyone who has done the swap other than myself..and currently that project is in planning phase. To make the swap work, at the minimum you will need the front and rear shaft from same astro you pull the case from. The input is identical from the 136 to the 4472. I have both in my garage.

Also, to remove the shafts you will need a special wrench that matches to external torx 12 and 14 (I think). You will use this tool maybe once to pull the front shaft at the transfer case. When you put it onto your new van, hit up fastenal for some flange bolts. I have heard a 12 point socket might work on pulling off the bolt. Judging by the look of the bolts I pulled off...indeed people have attempted. The right tool costs around 20 bucks.

The AWD light will illuminate. Deal with that in your fashion.

Enjoy no more transfer case drama-if your T case in good shape. Should the viscous clutch be in poor shape, that's a 400 dollar part in most places. Maybe less if you look around.

Leeann and I seem to be having running debate on the NP136. I think they are garbage fit for soccer mom duty but Leann believes they are fine. I have killed 3 in short order. After googling around, I found 2 people (one being leann) who have real problem with them. Maybe there are just a rash of problems out there with the old BW..I don't see it.

One other note, the front drive shaft on the BW is much bigger and beefier than the NP front drive shaft. I should post a photo. It's quite noticeable.

Hopefully my swap is going in this month.
How many sensors, fuses or computers does a Bw4472 need? Zero.

Reviving and old thread. I did a little junkyard scrounging today and found a couple AWD Astros. I was thinking that it might be a good idea to grab a spare transfer case when I come across an appropriate one. It appears that there are some variations of the early units with output splines. What years of van (or other AWD models) is a direct swap for my 1997?

Also is there any way to tell a good one from a bad one in a junkyard?
