2003 awd Safari front end hum

Postby marky30 [OP] » March 11th 2016, 5:09am

Hi..I thinking about buying an awd Safari here in MI.It has 112K miles, looks nice.$1500 bucks. The seller say the front axle is leaking somewhere and it hums..From what I gather this could be the ring and pinion going.(i think im wrong about the ring and pinion..i think its the differential im thinking of).possibly from the lack of fluid from the leaky seal. What do you think about this purchase?Should these issues deter me from looking into this van?.Any input and opinions welcome..Thanks

Never heard of a ring and pinion in the front? but then I don't have AWD.
Regardless these vans are not hard nor expensive to repair. If your handy, buy a factory service manual and get under there. If your not a mechanic will be expensive.

The pinion seal goes bad and the case seal, less often, goes bad. Probably the pinion seal. It went bad in my '99.

If it's humming, probably easiest to find a front diff in a junkyard and swap them.
