Check out this exhaust

Check out this exhaust

Postby ccookie66 [OP] » January 17th 2017, 6:12pm

Hey guys, as some of you know I'm getting back into the world of Astro/Safari vans. Have any of you seen this type of exhaust before? I'm wondering how it would look on a gen 1 shorty. I was looking online for various accessories for my van, and came across it. Let me know what you guys think.

The cost seems high for aluminized steel. That price is nearly on par with stainless.

Too much money! All you are paying for with that kit is the Gibson name. Go to your local muffler shop, they can build and install a similar set up for less. Aluminized pipe is standard fare in the shops.
Do not expect any massive power gains with one of these "kits". They sound good but that's all you get, noise. :)

besides that they come out the same side as your stock one does and it will not fit on a shorty with those tips on them. A shorty has maybe 6 inches after the wheel well.

Comes out in front of the wheel well.

Its because of rust the rust causes holes whereas the exhaust will get into the van, its legal after the wheelwell but not before. I used to do state inspections in Maine and believe me people are stupid and will use stuff like newspaper stuffed into the hole with Bondo over it just to keep driving in case you didn't know it Bondo is porous like concrete and exhaust fumes will go through it unless its sealed properly and believe me some of them folks don't care as long as it passes inspection. Besides that bondo and newspaper will fall out way before the next state inspection time which is a year apart.

I have seen it done before, while I was in Maine, and it's nowhere in the manual, as long as it exits to the SIDE or the REAR of the passenger compartment behind any operable windows. http://www.maine.gov/dps/msp/vehicles_i ... 13_002.pdf

So I still call ****.

Well I'm not really worried about power gains. Just a little sound and something that looks better than just the stock exhaust. Nothing too loud, just so I can hear the engine. I also heard that the Cherry Bomb Vortex muffler sounds nice on these vans, and they don't have that highway drone. Doing some pre planning before I get my new van! :D

Get a good Muffler you like And put it in the stock location. They sell tips that look like that and many other styles for the exit location. Save 250 bucks and do it yourself.

My wife likes the loud exhaust now. Because she gets so many compliments from people at her work how nice our van looks and sounds. She works at a retirement home. So this is all old people, women and nurses. The exact demographic that would think it sucks if it sounded bad.

If you want to do things to you engine and exhaust. Just call me I will help you. This forum is the last place you will ever get good advice on this topic. Just do it love it and don't talk about it here.

I don't see any reason to not discuss exhaust here. ...

In this particular case, seems like an expensive bolt on that will take a LOT more work and expense than the OP understands, to install it. End result will be louder exhaust and the tip(s) will look different. None of which is a bad thing, just expensive.

My local MexiWeld shop would do it for well under half that cost, it would be a custom fit, it would be welded and hung correctly and I wouldn't have to crawl under there and wrestle with rusty pipes and a face full of metal dust.

Because if it is a 6 the answer is your wasting your time or it sounds like ****. V-8 or no modification at all. This forum has a mental block against them. The real world where you actually live has a different opinion.

So if your asking advice on a 6 those are the answers given with a attitude. No actual help if that is what you actually want to do. I did it. And if I try to help there is a bombardment. Of it sucks and don't compare to my V-8 peanut gallery. But no actual help what so ever.

I have pm'ed many members over this issue. In E Mails and PM's because they do want what I have but don't want to deal with the flack. Many don't want to pretend their van is a muscle car just want better sound and more power. So in private is the only way to get it done. And both things are easily obtainable for very little money spent.

I state it is possible mine runs great. I get it wont beat mine as a taunt. I don't have a small penis complex I don't care but since it is brought up. Unless they got something there they don't got in ky you may just be real wrong. Pull up or shut up. I am sure they are the same motors all over. Just different smog and tuning.

So untill this little social drama changes the place to get help is definitely not here. It has been going on for years. There is a little quiet sub-culture operating below the radar doing these things. I should have just PM'ed him to help and not posted sorry.

Re: Check out this exhaust

I've been very happy with the sound and feel from my Gibson exhaust. I used to think my vans dual exhaust was loud until I got a V-8 diesel with 4" dual stacks. Now it seems way tamed.

One thing I've learned recently from piping my own vehicles is that the # of cylinders don't mean ****. It's the pipe diameter, length and obstructions in the pipe that determine the rumble at the tip. There are very basic physics formulas for determining the dimensions needed to create a certain note at the end of a pipe. How else could you get such deep bass sounds from musical instruments with just the human lung capacity?

Consider saving up for a new CAT too if needed in your state. These Gibson mufflers are all open space inside for the most part. They like to breathe! So an unplugged CAT and some intake mods should be towards the top of the list of ToDo's.

They probably sell that same setup in stainless. I'd keep an eye peeled because sometimes Amazon really drops their prices on Gibson when they have like one or two left. I waited and got mine for a few hundred less than when I added it to my wish-list.
