HO tail pipe pn

HO tail pipe pn

Postby markmitchmarkmitch is online! [OP] » February 4th 2020, 3:41am

In 1992 and 1993 they came out with an HO version of the 4.3 as part of the HO package there was a 2.5 inch tail pipe instead of the 2 inch tail pipe. I have no idea if it fits the AWD but I don't see why it wouldn't. Its made by walker and the part number is 44471. Oreilly can get it for 29.88 otherwise it cost more with shipping. It would be much better if you already have a V8 in or going in for breathing .

2 1/2" is good for large-displacement performance V8's.. but will hurt torque and fuel-economy of a stock V6 (velocity and savaging technology) if your talking about pipe size before the muffler. After the muffler tail-pipe anything will do.. larger the better. If your running headers, you'll probably have a custom exhaust anyway.

I agree, I have a 350 in mt 89 and I have to go through smog so I am going as stock as possible combining both the V8 Y pipe and converter to the V6 system after the cat so I was looking for a tail pipe and found this info and posted it for members.

Most of the Astro/Safari vans from 1992 to 1994 are 3" from the Y pipe to the muffler then they drop down at the exit of the muffler. The 94 I have for parts was 3" just as I posted above. I know this for a fact because the piece of pipe prior to the catalytic converter on my 94 parts van was bent to go through the transmission crossmember and it was 3" so i cut it and used it to make my basically stock exhaust from both the 94 and the truck I got my 350 from since the truck exhaust did not have the bends for the crossmember. I can try to take a few pictures if you wish Will? And post them later today.

I want to say mine had 3" as well. It was hacked from the cat back when I got it, but I seem to recall 3" between the Y pipe and the cat. I also had issues with crossmember clearance, the cat wanted to sit on top of the crossmember right next to the transmission. I resolved that by turning the cat/pipe assembly around. It just wasn't going to fit any other way. The drawback is that the oxygen sensor is a little further back now, and as such it stays cooler. I don't know if I'm ever achieving closed loop or not. I have the cable and the app, I just haven't looked at it.

edit: Think the exhaust part numbers might be listed in the parts pdf that's been floating around here for years?

It should be noted that calculations for optimum exhaust pipe size is not only determined by efficiency range and/or desired torque/HP range, but is also different for "2 into 1 single exhaust" vs "true dual exhaust"... single exhaust pipe (since it carries all) is typically larger. Velocity (and even back-pressure) is an important part of today's modern efficient engine design. There is a wealth of info out there on the topic. The tailpipe (after muffler) is less relevant... but once it leaves the muffler bigger here is better.
