Can the catalytic converter be eliminated?

Something very suspicious going on here. My 96 safari has the horizontal cap. Your engine may have been swapped at some point. My Safari also has four heated O2 sensors. One before and one after the cat on each side.

Its actually a 95. I was smoking crack when I checked. Sorry... That said I did a tuneup (cap/rotor plugs and wires, the correct ones for a 95) and it runs better for sure but still backfires at 2 to 3k and lacks power. Any ideas? Sensor or something maybe?
It supposedly ran ok before the cat blew up (was my dads work van).

no prob eliminating the CAT, but those pesky environment guys get a bit crazy over it...normal exhaust is carbon monoxide...too many hydrocarbons so lets change it to carbon dioxide...simple add a CAT with platinum core and platinum releases one molecule of oxygen..voila..carbon dioxide...so,,solve one problem by EPA and create another..ever wonder why a few years back people were losing their CAT to exhaust hackers in the middle of the night...for those CAT's still using platinum...check the market price of platinum...

I guess the point was monoxide not dioxide is a by product of the automobile internal combustion engine and the auto gets it in the neck.
The conversion to dioxide is one of the ways we create jobs and profit. Google how big a volume and dollar values Cat Converters add to the auto industry.
Planes, trains, boats are not as visible as the auto so they aren't in the focus of the 'Green' enthusiasts.
All emissions are bad for our lungs, don't get me wrong, but I'm not sure all the devices have decreased our dependency on petrol or reduced emissions.
Yep knew the post was an old one, but I wasn't sure if all the posters were prior to or after straight pipes and headers and O2 sensors and CAT converters.
Cheers....
