Feeling Like an idiot !!!! Part 2

Hi all.

Well here is part two

Got the cat off.... at last..... put a straight piece of pipe to the standard muffler, was a bit tricky with lots of swearing

Then ran it for a few days. It was a little better but not much. Then I looked underneath again at the muffler and I had put it on the wrong way round
So in my attempt to get it off I bust the pipe that comes out of the muffler . So I went to my local shop (very small) the only thing I could see was a cherry bomb muffler, so I bought it and have fixed it up, now it sounds like a crapy tractor aagghhhhhhhh.

So if I get another muffler can I still use the bomb or would there be no point.

You could prolly run two bombs inline to quite it down...

This is a case of do it right the first time.

Otherwise it's a lot of expended resources, frustration and time, all of which could be avoided.

Every time I find myself in a situation like this I learn from it and vow never to repeat it. Within a few weeks that vow's broken and I learn something else.

If your on a budget just pick up a cherry bomb turbo muffler.........they are very quiet mufflers(slightly louder then stock) even though there name would make you think otherwise. On my '92 with no cat and a turbo muffler it had a rumble to it, but wasn't overly loud on the highway or anything. They are like $20-$25 for the turbo mufflers.

if it makes you feel any better i just replaced my exhaust (cat, intermediate pipe, muffer, and tail pipe) i spent roughly 4 hours laying on my back to drill out the manifold studs to replace the gaskets between the manifolds and the y-pipe and another hour and a half hanging the entire exhuast. i get it all done then i realize the passenger side manifold is cracked all the way between the PS front and middle cylinders..my van still sounds like crap....... the point of this - we all have bad days, but we love our vans, keep your head up and replacement mufflers are only like 35 bucks.

I do love the van, but I feel that there are other issues with it that will a slow death for "ChuggaBoom" thats what my daughter calls the van.
There is an oil leak between the engine and transmission (((( not good, not sure how to diagnose the cause, bit there is oil on the exhaust pipe that runs in front of the transmission pan

It wont kick down, seems to be loosing power etc

please help as I love this little van.

you should have been here last year when i thought i would never get my van back on the road, check out my front diff issue and read it through, i felt like it was one thing after another.
and i now believe the bad motor mounts caused both my front diff problem and the exhuaust manifold crack.

and i forgot to say, if you love it enough, you will fix it. Astros and Safaris are like loyal dogs if you take care of them, it's bad owners that let them die

Only if you let those issues win. As Leve and others suggest, fix something right and it will
last a couple of decades at least. Astrofaris are tough little boxes with a tough little
motor. There's plenty of guys right here with 200k-300k miles on theirs. I have 292k
on mine. I've jerry rigged some stuff to fix problems. Always to find the "fix" breaking
in a few months. Then for just a couple dollars more, I've fixed it the RIGHT way and it lasted
for another bazillion miles.

Look at it as a "Quick Life" rather than a "Slow Death" for ol' ChuggaBoom.

Ok,

So I need some help with sorting out the transmission leak. Yes the pan in oily and covered in goop... nice

I have never changed the fluid just have kept it topped up to the right level. As I have stated in an earlier post it has lost power, there is always one hill on the way home it struggles with. Yet on the flat will happily do 120 kmh.

The kick down is reluctant to happen, also if I fully depress the gas pedal it still seems to get bogged down and runs rough. I have removed the cat (yes it was dead)

It needs a service, but not wanting to be a parts changer I would like to sort the problem. If the bands in the transmission are going could this affect the kick down, some times it gives a hard clunk when changing from 1st to second !

So I have no idea

Put a bloody catalytic converter on your car. There's absolutely no justification for not running one in light the needless pollution caused by unburned hydrocarbons. Universal Magnaflow cats are available inexpensively from Ebay.

I agree with Clyde. Make the darn thing legal and as non-polluting as possible.
The ECM-O2 stuff is designed to deal with the CAT. Install it ONE TIME and it
will last longer than you will.
