new muffler for me!

i cut out my entire rotted mess of exhaust pipe today. that took 90 seconds. now its a pile of junk in the driveway.

i bought a 3" in and outlet cherry bomb turbo and 5 feet of 3? pipe, a 90 degree sweep and some 3/8 round stock.

took about 3 hours total because i ran out of wire in my welder and thank god i had enough pipe welded in to run 18 miles to the store and back on the interstate.

its loud by the pipe exit at idle, but not offensive. throaty and not too rappy. absolutely no fart can sound. sounds nice. in the van i cant really hear it, about like the stock muffler except off idle to 15mph is louder but not by much.

i exited the pipe in front of the rear wheel with a 90 sweep. its not perfect yet but it will have to do.

engine runs better. forgot my phone in the van, sorry no pics yet till i go get it

Running the tailpipe in front of the tire may not be legal for vehicle inspection. You may want to check on that.

The big drawback is that you may get CO inside the cabin. Not a good thing: headaches...death.

Probably better there than straight out the back like my dual exhaust getting sucked in by bad rear door seals.....

no inspection in ND. my pickup is the same way from the factory, but its old.

I'm more concerned about the sliding door seal leaking CO into the cab then I am about inspection. Wouldn't want to

read your obit. Pick up truck has no widow or door in front of the rear wheel, merely old car parts in the tub...

Pretty well how mine's set up, I wish my piping was out a bit further as it resonates underneath. I think I want to go over axle at some point though.

Mine exit before tires (at 60 degree angles) on each side.
The sound is a deep purr while cruising.. and a deep rumble (in stereo) while idling.

From a low enough angle you can see everything.
They rumble like side-pipes.

I had a Chevy Suburban many years ago and exited the exhaust before the rear tires as you have and had no problem with gasses in the vehical

The exhaust on my '99 had already been replaced and we had to replace the exhaust on my '02. And the exhaust on my '93 needed to be replaced when I bought it. Pretty sure the exhaust on my '00 isn't long for this world, either, but I might be able to rob parts from the '99 and gold '02.

The only thing that has gone bad on mine are the three bolts holding the flange together in front of the muffler. Put a manifold clamp on each one as it broke. Over 6 years to lose all three. Nothing else. Of course that doesn't mean if won't fall off tomorrow.

there is a HO version of the tail pipe that is 2 1/2 inches inside diameter along with a 2 1/4 Y pipe that goes to 3 inches prior to the catalytic converter and stays 3 till the tail pipe. I have that system on my 350 Astro with the exception of the Y pipe which came from the truck I pulled my engine from and it too is 2.5 Y going into 3"
I can find some of the parts if your looking for them, I bought the tail pipe like 2 months ago.

Exhaust DEFINITELY needs to exit on the side. I had it exit straight out under the back bumper, the cabin filled with fumes if I opened the rear windows. I had it moved back to the stock location, problem solved.

Being serious as I can, if you don't have a stock tail pipe in it's stock location, please

don't fool around. Get yourself a CO detector, they are much cheaper than the alternative.

I just patched a spot on the muffler on the rig (2000) , i doubt it was ever changed as its an oem muffler , 16 years of salt land and still holding is not bad , but most stainless exhaust systems do last at least 10 years and i am sure that in lumpy land they last forever , i will be hunting pick and pull for a good one , if we ever get summer , warm weather is back order for a while still .

Musicman your van looks awesome! Been thinking about putting dual exhaust on my '91 Astro. Do you have any tips? I'd like the pipes to go behind the rear wheels and have a bad-ass growl sound when you step on the gas, but is that even possible with a 4.3? I'm open to the idea of swapping for a V8.
