Astro nearing 48k miles

Postby astro-gal [OP] » June 1st 2021, 6:49am

howdy yall :D

ive recently purchased a 2002 Astro AWD LS with about 47,800 miles on it. it was an old taxi cab being used in Juneau Alaska.

i love it! its still orange from the cab color but its the greatest thing on the road out here!

anyhow, I have searched a few things on it to keep the engine and evrything else in tip top shape. it definitely needs some work. i just wanted to get some input from yall to see what are the most common parts that get replaced or break down on an astro of this year.

so far the heater/ac has been giving me trouble. sometimes it turns on and sometimes it does not.

thank you all for any help.

Well the good news is this trouble is fairly common, and usually fairly easy to fix.
But you'll need to be more specific.

The heating/AC system is comprised of essentially 3 sub-systems:

* A/C (refrigerant/compressor) or heat evaporator coil (hot engine coolant)
* Electric fan (blowing across a/c or heating coils)
* Control room (air duct control)

Specify problem:

* Is fan intermittent?
* Is vent control intermittant?
* Is it making A/C and/or heat?

All VERY DIFFERENT problems with different (sometimes fairly easy) solutions.

Again.. WELCOME! :D

Congratulations on a great purchase!
My 5th Van just hit 50k, and no mystery with any regular maintenance.
Front suspension components, brake booster, hvac vacuum hose, are all items on every one I’ve owned.
Love to see pics!

Congrats on what sounds to be a great purchase. Some typical failure/maintenance items that my 2002 needed were:

Vacuum Lines (failure usually indicated by defrost vent only HVAC output)
Idler arms
Power Steering Pump shaft seal leak (I still need to get around to this)
Oil and Trans Cooler lines
Intake Manifold Gasket (I personally recommend flushing out any Dexcool and replacing with universal or ethylene glycol "green" coolant)

If you're not sure of the maintenance history, a full suite of fluids and filters is a great idea.

Welcome!

Idler arms, all fluids, vacuum lines, cap-rotor-plugs-wires (and check the distributor at the same time), grounds (cleaning and tightening), brake pads and hoses…these are the basic things to do/check on a new-to-you Astro.
