Torque Specs list?

Torque Specs list?

Postby deleteitall [OP] » June 19th 2015, 12:08am

I remember a torque specs list somewhere but my memory is fading....

I need a list of torque values for my 1997 Chevy Astro, especially for the 4 gas tank strap bolts, and the 10 bolts for the differential cover.

Is there a list somewhere of ALL the torque values for an Astro van?

Torque is Torque. It's not specific to any particular spot where a fastener lives. It's only specific to the bolt size, hardness and lubricated or not. A given size/grade bolt needs the same torque whether it's attaching a water pump to an Astro van or a heat shield to the space shuttle.

So as long as you know the size and hardness grade of your fastener, you can apply torque per any of a gazillion downloadable torque charts.

Things like gas tank straps are not critical torque. All they have to do is not come undone.

Diff cover bolts are 5/16 - 18. Look at the head and compare to the chart for the hardness.

Note in the charts that lubricated bolts (oil, antiseize, loctite) require 20-25% LESS torque.

So if you're installing a 36mm grade 12.9 bolt, and it's lubricated, don't set your torque wrench on 3500 ft/lbs, it only needs 2750.

Thanks Lump good stuff right there, I'm gonna have to copy that on paper. Still wouldn't mind a mechanics torque list or GM spec list to keep on hand, easier for me that way. Some of the bolts are rusted so they might be hard to decipher.

Diff cover bolts are either 11 or 15 ft lbs. not much at all.

Gas tank straps just need to be tight. Overtight might make the weldnuts take a spin when you want to loosen them the next time.
