Re: What do you tow with your "Stro"

This is what I tow with mine. I normally get 10 to 12 MPG, and the van really doesn't even know it's there, except for accelerating.

I painted the trailer as a billboard, and it's paid for it self 5 times over the past 5 years.

And one of these are in the trailer when I use it. I made the red one from an old Cub Cadet, and the green one from and old John Deere... I modified both... a little :D

Re: What do you tow with your "Stro"

Postby Corsemoto » April 12th 2012, 7:09pm

I recently moved some things back home and had been gearing up the van for this journey for some time. My van and rental 6x12 trailer were loaded down (ok, overloaded - the trailer alone weighs 2000lbs empty) but the van handled the 10+ hour journey admirably. Having previously towed a couple of these with my old van, I wasn't a big fan but with my Astro setup, it handled it really well.

Pretty proud of the old Astro, no hiccups the entire journey from 90+ degree temps leaving, to full on thunderstorm and gusting winds at the end of my journey. I had my Jet programmer/scanner plugged in and the van never went over 200 degrees even with front/rear a/c on full blast at times. I set the Rancho RS9000XL shocks to #8 in the front and #9 full stiff in the back, Yokohama Geolandar AT/S (XL load) tires to 38/40psi and don't think this extra load would have been possible without the add-a-leafs installed. I averaged just over 10 mpg on the trip with the transmission in "3" and tow/haul mode selected - the van just plugged away, drove and shifted great the entire time (thanks to the auxiliary transmission cooler).

A couple of things I would like to do would be to replace the leaf spring with S10 HD spring packs and "E" load rated tires (+ tpms system) for peace of mind.

A 25' Gulfstream Amerilite.

I still have the 3.42 gears, I'm planning on going to 4.10's this year.

She goes well in FL but it is really flat. About 9-10 mpg if I stay at 58mph.

Got this decent sized utility trailer new to haul some stuff. Unfortunately, under bad circumstances :( . But I like it. Even though it only weighs like 800 pounds, I feel it behind the van. MPG drops and it's harder to keep a cruising speed. I guess it's that loading ramp causing air resistance

My little HaulMaster utility trailer from Harbor Freight. Made in China, some assembly required. Will post pix once I have the plywood deck and sides painted to match the van....

So far, only used it for a dump run.

Re: What do you tow with your "Stro"

Postby kornphlake » April 24th 2012, 7:01am

My little 4x8 trailer, very similar to the above mentioned Haul Master. The load rating of the 8" wheels is just under 1000lbs and I've been pretty careful not to push that, I keep it under 65mph, usually under 55mph if I can, those little wheels spin too fast trying to keep up with the van, I don't want to risk tearing the tires apart or melting the bearings. I hardly notice the trailer since it's so light, about the only time I notice it is stopping on a down hill I have to start braking a bit earlier than normal. Backing up a tiny trailer is a challenge, especially when you can't see it in the mirrors until it's started to go crooked, at that point I can't turn sharp enough to correct. I've actually gotten bound up trying to back up on dirt roads and had to un-hitch and turn the van and trailer separately, fortunately the little trailer is easy to move by hand.

So far a couple of different trailers, more will come in the future as we have 1/2 dozen trailers around here. Loving the Safari so far.

Then of course the inside where I carry a racebike sometimes. This is using the Pitbull strapless stand I installed.

We tow a big 12' pop up trailer along with 5 kids and a dog. We make a yearly 3500 km round trip to camp and visit relatives.
The Stro has no problem running the hills on the North shore of Lake Superior with about 4500 lbs of trailer and gear.

Ok, new HD springs are on, here it is towing the same box trailer with the same PA inside. It's not squatting now, at all.

Here it is with a couple of race bikes on a teeny trailer behind it just before I left Barber Motorsports Park. Got 18.5 mpg towing the trailer and had a nice place to sleep. Win win.

We tow this occasionally with either the Cub Cadet on it or a couple of snowmobiles.

And you saw this elsewhere, but found out the van pulls this nicely too, so we will use the van more often.
