What are the specs of this boat? My father-in-law will be using mine to pull a boat. He is looking at them now. Just wanting and idea of what sizes he could look at to buy.

'89 Sea Ray 230 Cuddy Cabin. Dry wieght is listed as 3,900 lbs, but as it sits I estimate the boat is close to 5,500 lbs and the the trailer is 500 ~ 600 lbs (all alluminum) so the set up is about 6,000 lbs. Boat traielr has 4 wheel disc brakes. Boat and trailer total length is about 30 feet (I haven't measured it, just based on the foot print it takes up in my out building.)

Thank you, sir. Big help. I like that size. It will be good for 4 adults and 2 kiddos to go crabbing/fishing/lounging. And if it gets to be too much for the 'Stro, I can use my Tahoe to pull it.

Thanks again.

I rebuilt this old 14' 1935 Starcraft galvanized steel fishing boat a couple years back,it sure was ugly when I got it.Got it cheap for $100,got the trailer with a junk fiberglass boat for $50,got the 15 hp Gamefisher motor for $25.All from craigslist over a period of time while I was laid up with a broken ankle. It all needed worked on,but was well worth it.Will post a pic soon of my Astro pulling this boat.

Re: What do you tow with your "Stro"

Postby cowboydan » September 2nd 2012, 10:49pm

i have only ever towed one trailer. my van didn't come with even so much as a hitch or a roof rack. i found the wireloom in the back and found a 20 dollar hitch at the bone yard. adding just this seemed to tighten up the rear sway, though calgary does experience some wicked crosswinds. i don't have a rear sway bar but it did tow just fine for 40k. up hill was great, good power but she hunts for gears on steady climbs. calgary is getting a new race facility, this means i need one of those double axle toy haulers that weigh like 2500lbs empty! with my regal weighing in at 3500lbs, the rear suspension has to be addressed. the regal when done will be beond the 500hp limit( dot has set out as a rule), so if i don't want them to tow me, i better just build the astro to deal with the weight. if all else fails, and the 4.3 just won't cut it in the van, i have a BBB430 for the backup powerplant. to date, i have added 40+hp to my 4.3, and it really shows when pulling, if i add another 40hp i should have no issues, when loaded to 6500lbs. 6000lbs+ tools and pit crew, i'll be almost 7500lbs total. that is beond max, so i'm going to put a plan together now. in 2 years i might able to beef up the astro enough.

I've been dying to post in this threaqd because what I (now) tow has been a year and a half in the making:

1599

This is my hand built Goat Island Skiff. It is a 15.5' plywood single masted sailboat that weighs on the order of 150 (or so, haven't put it on a scale yet). The trailer was homebuilt by someone in my town for his own homebuilt boat, so it was pure serendipity when I found it on Craigslist. My future plans are to incorporate into the trailer cradle a method for securing the 16' mast (seen here on my Safari's roof) and the 12' spars (not seen here tucked into the van's cabin.
