Factory Tow Package

Factory Tow Package

Postby Gone Blue [OP] » August 12th 2009, 8:12pm

I am trying to decide if the 98 AWD that I just bought has the factory towing package. It has a class three hitch and the trailer wiring has 8 wires. I dont see a trans cooler unless it is on the back side of the radiator inside the fan shroud. The A/C evaperator core covers the whole front of the radiator as best as I can see.

Can anyone tell me what the RPO code is for this option?
I assumed that the factory tow package would include a trans cooler. Is this correct? Where would the trans cooler be located on a 98 AWD?

Thanks, G.B.

The trans cooler is internal in the radiator. It is on the right (passenger) side inside the plastic tank.

As far as I know all the 1996 and newer vans had a trans cooler built into the radiator. At least all 4 of the ones I'm owned did. Don't recall of my pre-1996 vans did.

Thanks guys. That makes some sense why I dont see the trans cooler. Do you guys know what would of came with the towing package? Would it of just been the hitch and axle ratio? Thanks again, G.B.

Usually it's just the hitch and wiring, though some models did have button on the gear selection stalk for tow/haul mode. My 2000 had it.

I'm confused... my 2000 safari has the tow/haul mode switch on the end of the shifter, a bundle of wires near the jack and 3.42:1 rear end ratio... but it does not have a trailer hitch.

It obviously can't have the "factory tow package"... right?

I ordered my 97 new. It did come with the trailer package. I believe all the package included was wiring to the spare tire well. It didn't come with a hitch. Look up the http://www.c2e.info/rpocodes/ RPO codes on the door sticker to find out what options you have.

Almost all automatic transmission vehicles have some kind of a transmission cooler plumbed into the radiator.

I think the TH-250 transmissions were air cooled and didn't have fluid coolers.

^ yup, no external tranny cooler from the factory, which I don't understand. Neither my Bravada nor my Astro have an additional tranny cooler, which I will rectify on the Astro since, once it's running, it'll do most of the towing duties.

On my old '90 Dodge B250 w/360, when you got the towing package from the factory you got an additional tranny cooler plumbed in along with the radiator cooler (sandwiched in between the radiator and condensor).

Doesn't make much sense not to, imho.

My old '93 K5 Blazer had the towing package & it had the external cooler on it. Wonder how they decide what needs the external and what doesn't to be considered a towing package from the factory. :whack:
