Anyone build a Front Wheel drive Astro flat bed tow truck ?

Postby trackvw [OP] » May 31st 2015, 3:28am

In Europe its pretty common to have a front wheel drive flatbed tow truck ,

some of them have twin axles in the back with smaller wheels so the loading bed can be much lower,

Will an All wheel drive AstroVan work with only the front wheel part hooked up ?

is it strong enough ?

I would be only hauling 2500-3000 pound cars , and mostly smaller 2000 pound cars....

Just an idea , maybe a crazy one :)

and if you have seen one please point me to the pictures

Thanks

 Graft a tandem car hauler to the front subframe of an Astro....sure it would work. The question is WHY? Helluva lotta work to get a tow vehicle with no cab space and a WIDE turning radius.

There's no frame in an Astro. Making an "El Camino" or pickup or convertable/no top means removing the top half of the structural part of the van.

Build a frame under it and you might be able to strengthen it to the point where it's safe. Start loading weight on the back and it's an even bigger engineering think through.

If you do it, I want to see roughly eleven-gazillion photos. And none of those "turned on their side cellphone shots" either. It would look cool as heck..

I suggest researching those who have built an El CaminoAstro to find out how they've dealt with the unibody, no frame issue. If they're still around, see if the thing is still together or has it buckled so much as to make the doors un-openable etc.

Hope it works!

PM Stan (DRZ) for info on doing an Astro pickup; And I hope you get it figured out. People have built some very ambitious project vehicles on this site. This would be one of them, for sure!

I see at least one like you're describing a week.
I think a shop near me builds them.

The astro van flexes like a russian ballerina..and that's with the "square" (not really square) body around it. I bet a version with out the box would really flex.

Don't know how long the front axle would last running full time. Keep the rear wheel drive and make a flatbed.

I would like to see someone raise the roof or at least everything behind the cab.
How many sensors, fuses or computers does a Bw4472 need? Zero.

Anything is possible, but the cost would far outweigh the useableness of the vehicle. What I suggest would be start with a truck frame with 4x4 figure out how to disable the rear axle then put the front cab section of an Astro fabricate it so you have the back section (like DRZ did) then attache the flatbed section. And if you do decide to take on such a project take gazillion pictures and post them here so we can see. Good luck Papa Mark

Thanks for your thoughts

It is just an idea , there are many times that it would be useful but then I would need a place to store it....
My friend in Italy has one , that works out good for his shop, his is based on an Iveco truck

I have a couple car trailers too !
