Front Mounted Towing Hitch

Front Mounted Towing Hitch

Postby mrosspa [OP] » February 2nd 2008, 6:04pm

I just got my drawtite towing hitch from etrailer (very helpful store), and I'll be installing it today.

Previously someone an idea for having a front mounted hitch that was pretty cool. Their suggestion was to have a custom install where the receiver would sit behind the license plate. You could have a spring mount for the license plate so it lifts up, and the hitch or winch cound fit into the hidden receiver.

Has anyone done this. I'm always looking for suggestions.

I will do that if it is possible. First things, I'm installing a rear trailer hitch today.

Re: Front Mounted Towing Hitch

So many others have put on their own rear hitches, this was first for me.

The manufacturer, hidden hitch, said 70 minutes. It took me 2 hours. Once I figured out what I was doing, it bolted right in. I got one that allows me to attach a full size spare tire.

I don't know about other hitches, but there are two rear bumper brackets that are removed and the hitch is bolts into the same spot. Once all the connections are bolted up, the rear bumper is in essence firmly attached to the frame.

If someone hits me from behind, that hitch and bumper is going to tear up the front end of their car.

Now with a rear hitch attached, I can see I'll need to lift the van.

The hitch was about $180, and shipping was free! I like free.

Anyone install a front hitch? I think it would be a great thing to have for a motorcycle carrier, winch or even a cargo carrier. Someone post up some pics please!

thanks

I have two hitches, why? well I got one for the rear and then the other while on my shopping spree couldn't let a good hitch get crushed. Figured I 'll prolly get another astro for the road.

I also thought how about making it fit the front with a similiar idea to the previously stated but mounted inside the bumper with the license plate/ winch, being an insert to the reciever.

But really?!!!!!!!!!!!! how much more weight can a 2x astro really carry up front with out affecting steering, suspension etc?
And what upgrades to the springs etc would have to be done to tote a MOTORcycle???

Your Ideas please?

wanna figure out if this is worth it or not?

thanks

Find a reputable off road shop that does custom fab work. They can fab you up something nice.

If you can weld, I'd say go for it.
I haven't looked under there as to do something like this, but I'd think you could fab up a bracket to attach to the cross member and maybe a couple gussets to keep it from bending or twisting. It wouldn't need to be as durable as a rear hitch seeing your only going to be moving a trailer with it not towing. I'm sure you know you can buy the receivers as well as the fold down licenses plate thingys.
