High top for 1st gen shorty .

Wanting a high top to convert to a Poptop on the east coast , I’m in nj ! Help I can’t keep my van unless I can stand up due to back issues ! Thanks all !

You mention pop top, so I'm guessing you wouldn't be able to stand in with it down.
I'm wondering if you could cut an original top of a JY van and use it to fab a pop top.
Would keep an almost OG look while down... hmm

Sorry, probably beyond what you're looking for, but it would be kinda cool to give an Astro the Sprinter treatment (forgive the crude Paint rendition).

Nothing is free in life my friend but if you can do the work I have seen a few in pick n pulls out here in Ca so I would imagine there must be some elsewhere.

I recently inquired with fiberine.

Fiberine in California has a basic 12" top for $1850 with $950 same day install. Crating and shipping is more than a road trip would cost, so I'd go to them. Do I want to pump another 4 grand in? Honestly, probably not.

this wasn't for the shorty, but now you know more than you did, and probably more than you wanted to know.

You may be better off keeping an eye out for a used conversion van with a high top already.
No idea how much you're anticipating to spend on this, but even finding a used one can get $$$ quick if you're not DIY'ing it.

Hi yes fiberdine and discount van tops are to much money ! I have been to all yards in my area and haven’t found a first gen top , a few long ones but nothing yet ! I will keep an eye out and keep looking on the diy pop top Facebook group for ideas ! Thanks guys !

Thats actually not as high as I'd have expected! Still more than most of us would want to spend, but - if local to them - the labor charge is actually quite good!

Wholps... seems I missed one.

I believe the Sprinter and models from Ford, Nissan and Dodge are Taller on the inside for those of us ( me included ) with back problems ( sciatica from time in Marines and Viet Nam ).

Looking at the pic with the second top in place, looks a but weird with that overhang. If the bottom van was an extended body, like all Gen II's, that might work without too much extra massaging.
Just cut it a cargo top down to whatever height you need and fill in the holes where the windows were.

I would say use car-part.com and search something on a first gen astro that they would all have, then look through the results at the pictures they provide - which are of the van overall and not of whatever part you may be searching. I did that, and saw a van in a jy with a top I liked, so I called to confirm it was there, then went to go get it.

Best bet is scouting the junk yards, don't be afraid to take a road trip to some of the larger ones. Shouldn't be too hard to shorten a fiberglass top if you find one you like.

Hey there. I’m also in NJ and I got a 24” high top from a guy outside of Greensboro NC. He had the mold and all the accessories. His name is James. +1 (336) 847-7610 . I haven’t had much luck contacting him after I bought mine but you can give it a shot.

Between 1st & 2nd gen.The roofs are only slightly different at the front edge.
Don't overlook using a second gen top and shortening it.
