Sliding cargo door window for '96 Astro (non-extended)

Sliding cargo door window for '96 Astro (non-extended)

Postby Tremelune [OP] » November 11th 2008, 12:06am

Someone busted my sliding door window on Halloween...I'm looking to put glass back in. I'm located in Brooklyn, NY, but would pay shipping.

I'm looking around for what models/years fit...

Anything from a 96 and up should work OK. They changed the design of the door roller supports in 96 and doors made previously to that can be made to work but it will take some rework of the guides and attachments.

As far as the glass there are two categories and three types. Privacy glass used prior to 93/94 was slightly lighter and different in tint, along with clear glass (lighty tinted, same as driver's door). Then there is glass that is the "pop-out" type, it has hinge plates at the top and latches at the bottom, the other is the fixed glass which is typical in cargo vans and is glued in. You can use the pop-out type (which will probably be easier to find) in a cargo van, just make sure that you get all of the hardware when you buy the glass, assuming that you pick it up from the wreckers.

The size and type of the window is unimportant to me, I only want it to fit and be cheap. Do you know which of these are interchangeable through the years?

They are all interchangeable as afar as size and shape.
What I was explaining was what the differences are so you understand clearly what to look for and what work will need to be done depending on what you find or buy.

marcus38, not sure if you got my private message. I would love to see a photo. Basically, if the window locks and is in a frame such that I can unscrew the old one, swap them, and screw the new one in, I'm pretty much sold.

u talkin about the latch? a screw thru the glass holds it in. it can be removed. one pic shows a small hole in the corner where the top screws went thru. with all the screws and hardware off, there will be a hole at each corner about the size of a no. 2 pencil. u can get rubber grommet plugs that will pop in to seal it up.

Dang, I'm still on the lookout for this. It is a metal frame with the glass built in. It pops/screws in.

Unfortunately, I don't know which model years will fit (I've asked in another thread without much luck). Is there a way I could find out part numbers online? I'm having difficulty with this particular item.

That was my response on November 11th. It has all the info that you should need.
However, it sounds like you have a "cargo" style sliding door. Any year from 1996 up will work, but you will have to look at cargo vans to find that style. Cargo van windows are generally glued in. You can tell it is a glue in becuase it will have a half-round plastic border on the edge of the window that is glued into the door.

A 1996 and up passenger van will also work, but the window will most likely be a "pop-out" style, which means that it has two plastic latches on the bottom edge that latch the window closed. Passenger van windows have a hinge at the top and the latches at the bottom. When you open the window it sticks out at teh bottome. When you close it, it seals against an inside weather stripping that is pressed into the window frame. The passenger sliding door itself will work OK in your van, the window will just be different.
