Aftermarket radio

Aftermarket radio

Postby srdragonusa [OP] » September 12th 2016, 6:28am

I got the kit to install an aftermarket single din Radio. Is it me or is this a Crap way to install one of these radios? The damn thing won't stay in! I think I am either going to get a Factory radio and gut it like Wimpazz did for his Bluetooth project or just fab something to hold that damn thing in.

Any thoughts?

Oh I dunno, my install kit went in super easy and undramatic. The Bluetooth idea is a good one though

Some of those kits are better than others for sure. Did the side rails click into place ok? Should have been an audible click x2. Really need to shove it in there if the latches aren't quite to spec.

Btw the biggest downside to the BT radio mod so far is having to constantly re-pair the amp with my phone. Not a big deal but FWIW.

That's because you have to get two bolts to screw the deck into your adapter. They don't come with the adapter. Take your deck into ace with you, try to thread bolts until you find the right pair.

Not sure what brand, I got it from Best Buy. I guess I'll take it apart again. Ug! taking apart the dash is always stressful.

Remove the cig tray. Leverage up with your fingers from there. Put the parking brake on. Lower tilt wheel and place tranny in first. Pop the dash bevel, every six inches or so until it's free. Unplug the lights on the left. Move dash off to the side towards passenger area.

Bada Bing you're in biz.

Also, Best Buy will never offer a competitive price. They make their money off people who can't google search.

Thanks Buddy, I have taken the dash off but there's always a chance of breaking it. The So Cal Sun really makes the dash brittle. That said.

I just took it all apart and found the radio was not seated properly. I got it all the way seated and believe it should be fine now. I took out my original dash to replace it and didn't put the radio back properly so it was actually my fault it was loose.

Well at least I can say I am getting pretty good at taking the dash out and replacing it. ;-)

Thanks again guys.

Glad it all came together Paul. Like everything else, pulling the doghouse, doing plugs, so on... you'll be an expert after a few tries, then wonder "how did I ever think that was difficult?!"

Does your new radio have preamp outs for the subs in the back. Little RCA plugs. They have all kinds of nice sub kits that fit under the seats now. Even made to look like other things. My brother has one that looks like a nitrous bottle in his 68 charger.

Yes it does, I just saw some low profile subs I might look into one of those. I'll build a shelf under my seat for it. I guess I'll find another spot for my Gun Safe. ;-) Anyone have a review on a low-pro Sub?

An 8" subwoofer or two, (CT Sounds, Sundown Audio, Skar Audio) in a proper enclosure would be great to give the music depth, not break the bank (too much), and you'll be able to hide them easier. If you'd like something smaller than 8", Skar audio has a 6.5" for $79.99 (model EVL-65) that'd do great. It take 400 watts and needs a .25Ft^3 sealed enclosure OR a .60Ft^3 ported enclosure. Only needs 3.5" depth to mount it.

Just giving some ideas.
"Installer's Nightmare" has officially come to life. Only 1 sub, but loud and clear.
