new speakers...no treble

new speakers...no treble

Postby Vandy_B [OP] » December 18th 2016, 10:11pm

So I decided to replace the fairly mediocre stock speakers in my 03 Astro. Easy job. Replaced the rear pillar speakers...noticeable improvement.

I replaced the drivers front and tested it out and now I have no treble. I got 3-way speakers. Is that the problem? I know the stock speakers have a separate tweeter. Is the 3-way speaker not getting the treble signal? But if that's the case the stock tweeter should still be giving me treble

I thought that maybe I had the wires reversed (since the + and - wires aren't labeled) so switched them and no difference.

Any ideas from someone who actually KNOWS something about sound systems (as opposed to me that is...)

I'm wondering if the stock speakers were using a bandpass filter or something...

Treble comes from the top tweeter in the door.. the bottom speaker is probably a low-passed woofer. This would mean there is a crossover somewhere (the bottom speaker only sees lows), and you are not on the full range side of it.

Mmusicman...That's what I was thinking, but the stock tweeter was still connected and I still was not getting treble from that side. Of course, I don't know if I was getting treble before when the stock speaker was in. Maybe I'll try hooking it back up and see what happens.

Of course, all of this is after swapping out a bad door and pulling all the wires out and then putting them back in may have screwed something up.

DOH! OK...lesson learned here: if you're testing out speakers make sure that the signal coming out of both the right and left channel is the same.

Turns out the reason I wasn't getting treble out of the drivers side was that the song had different levels of treble on the left and right. Turns out they're working fine.

The other lesson learned is that the crappy Pioneer speakers aren't really any better than the crappy stock speakers...

Believe it or not... many factory speakers are good quality, and often times better than average aftermarket replacements.
