Rear (dutch) door speakers not working

Rear (dutch) door speakers not working

Postby Vandy_B [OP] » December 19th 2016, 8:47pm

I have factory speakers in my dutch doors but they don't work. I pulled the panels and they are connected. I tested the passengers side by running a wire from the pillar speaker to that speaker and it worked, so it must be an issue with the wires (blue and green). I took the easy route and just spliced a wire into the pillar speaker wire and ran it through the access hole in the door and now it works. But that is just the passengers side.

The drivers side has the rear heater core in the way and I wasn't able to fish a wire through there. Anyone have any luck doing that without disassembling the whole heater and duct assembly? Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Andy

Did you check the rear subamp for operation? Its behind the driver side center panel, behind the heater. Are you using the stock head unit?

The previous owner had the stock stereo replaced. I don't know about the rear subamp. I can certainly pull the side panel and look...sounds like a reasonable possibility for them not working. Does that subamp drive the rear pillar speakers too?

Um...what does it look like? anyone have a pic?

Thanks!

Sub amp only drives the door speakers (sub frequencies only).

Wow. Dat's a big hand!

Aftermarket radio does not play well with the sub-amp, or so I heard.

Sorry, gotta ask, did you make sure the fader was set correctly on the head unit? Never hurts to ask. Barring that, it sounds like the head unit was not installed correctly, might want to pull it and check the wiring. Pillar speakers are setup in the harness as rear speakers.

Thanks for posting the pic. I thought I remembered seeing something there when I had the panels off before so I checked there before I saw the pic. The amp is hooked up. But when I pulled the plug on it, nothing changed. So it seems like the stereo was not hooked up correctly.

And yes, the fader control was adjusted...but always good to ask!

So if the pillar speakers are the "rear" then what goes to the rear subamp?

You actually have to bypass the amp completely to remove the "sub woofer" aspect of that amp. If you just unplug it, the symptom will get worse.

Have you actually put your ear to one of the door speakers with the system turned up and the amp plugged in? I seem to recall that the frequency cross over on those door speakers is pretty low and almost inaudible.

Not sure why they call it an amp as it only seems to deamplify. My limited understanding of audio makes it sound more like a low band filter.

I'm here still! - I've been doing a lot more lurking than posting lately.

Glad that fix worked for ya. All I did was take all the jumbled info on all the threads and put it into one location. - Cheers!
