Double DIN 1997

Double DIN 1997

Postby Jasen [OP] » September 15th 2009, 1:57am

I'm researching to replace my stock head unit in my 97 Astro. I'd rather not do a single DIN and as you all know, theres not much out there for 1.5 DIN
I just popped my dash trim loose enough to get a height measurement. There is enough height there at the front. Question is, because I'm to lazy to rip my stock head unit out, is there enough room to get a DD in the hole without the dash trim in place. It wouldn't be the first time I cut up a dash or took a torch to reform a venting duct etc.
A DD is 4x7 and the depth is what, 7+"

I agree about the look of a single DIN unit, not that great. See pic below of my '90 Safari. I picked up this inexpensive Sony unit a year ago just before we took a cross country trip so we could listen to CD's and the iPod. This unit has the Apple iPod cable coming out of the back of the unit, I ran it down and into the glovebox. We just open the glovebox, pull up the cable and connect the iPod.

Have you looked at the Pioneer DEHP77DH Head unit? They say it is designed to custom fit and replace the factory 1.5DIN units on GM and Chryslers. I have not been able to determine if it has an iPod cable connector option. Here is a link to the unit on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/DEHP77DH-Pioneer- ... B000LS94XK

Heres some better info on it.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_130DEHP77D ... _and_specs

I might have to go look at that.

Just so you know, Pioneer doesn't list this unit on their website. Probably discontinued /last years model/low sales.

^ I put a similar unit in my Bravada when I bought it, though I didn't spend any time routing the cable nicely (I think I know what my next project is....).

The other 2 cables on the left are for my old Sirius; please ignore them. I've a better mounting solution for that now (but now I need to do cable routing again).

I gave up on the idea and just went with a single din. Didn't find any DD I liked with the feature's I wanted, without going to a video play back system. Not something I want and more then I wanted to spend.
