2 Ohm Head Unit?

Postby jeff's93astro [OP] » July 20th 2010, 6:06am

i've found a nice set of infinity speakers but they're all 2 ohm. and i cant find a 2 ohm head unit so are they safe to run on certain 4 ohm head units or am i not looking in the right place for a 2 ohm head unit. Or can i run them on my current head unit its an older one but seems like a real good unit

No... don't do it... you'll damage out the amplifier.

thats what i thought.
These are the cheaper infinity speakers. Now would these be better than the blaupunkts in the dash and the memphis audios in the back doors i'm running now. they sound good but i dont like running mix match like that. O yea cant forget the boss 4" in the pillars

If you were to connect two of them in series, it would add up to 4 ohms, then if you add another in the pillar, also in series, now it would be 6 ohms total, for the three speakers. It's been a while, but I think that is the way it works with speakers.

Check with a stereo install shop, they would know for sure. I wonder if they make these so one would be able to balance the impedance within the system.

Good luck, Keith

sounds like it'd be easier just to get 4 ohm speakers

You can do what Keith mentioned by running them in series, or get a 2ohm stable amplifier. I wouldn't go with running @6ohm. The 4ohm speakers would be easier to install.

Another thing that you can do is to install a ¼-watt 6-ohm resistor in series to bring it up to 8 ohms.

I've found a set of 4 ohm infintys so thats the route i'm gonna take. And i've never really tried different brands i've always used Sony everything :o (I know) I always thought sony was good stuff but after reading on here and seen reviews online on some of their products its really not as good as i thought. And the Pioneer head unit i got was gave to me from my dad and sounds really good for old as it is.

So now i'm stepping out on a limb and gonna try new stuff but i want reasonably good quality stuff and my question is would a Pioneer head unit go real good with these Infinitys.http://www.millionbuy.com/inf6032si.html

Also i do plan on upgradeing to a Pioneer premier within the next year if that help with quality or would i need a different brand head unit?

As long as you stick with the main brands you'll be all right. Main brands = Pioneer, Alpine, Kenwood, Clarion, JVC. there are more, but those are the main ones I'll use (well, besides SoundStream products, but that's another class all together)

Stay away from Boss, Audiovox, Pyramid, Dual, Rampage, and anything you'll see new at a flea market.

Of course, it really all depends on what you want your system to do and sound like.

And yes, the pioneer will match up to the Infinitys real good. Infinitys usually are very good equipment and sound great.

Thats good i'll stick with Pioneer and it also looks like i'll be replaceing the Dual 12's in the back with infinitys also then.

And last thing i've got a 2 channel 400watt audiobahn amp bridged to those Duals which are wired in series in a band pass box. so would these Infinitys http://www.millionbuy.com/inf1260w.html
sound better in a band pass box or a sealed box.

x2 on the brand name stuff.

As a teenager I was an avid fan of Pyramid. At age 16, I bought my first pair of 6x9 woofers from the stereo closeout sale, built a pair of oval shaped enclosures and then used an Audiovox amp to power them. I had a pretty decent sounding system..little did I know I bought a bunch of junk..
