A/C high pressure valve won't stop leaking

A/C high pressure valve won't stop leaking

Postby SLIMESTER [OP] » July 11th 2017, 11:43pm

My a/c high pressure port is leaking real bad and the only thing holding it is the dust cap. I poked a small screwdriver in it to try and re-seat the seal and lots of air and oil, or refrigerant comes out, but it won't completely seal. I hope I they sell high pressure schrader valves at my local auto parts store. If I replace that valve, would I have to evacuate the system after?

They do sell that valve, pretty common. And yes, evac and recharge.

Screw out the whole valve and replace it with a new port, this one should fit perfectly:
Link: http://a.co/1y3IkfQ

Regarding evac... as long as there is pressure in the system, then moisture could not get in so may not have to vacuum. I recharged mine w/o evac after the system was depressurized for years. Why? 'cause I'm an idiot... but it held up just fine. Receiver/ dryer soaked it all up no problem.
Point being if you have always had positive pressure, and are quick about changing out that valve on a non-rainy day, should be fine. Yes there is a risk, but a pretty small one. Safe bet is like TnB said.

You shouldn't have to put in more PAG oil since your system is pressurized still, so just straight R134 in the amount appropriate to your van, see yellow sticker on AC box under hood, passenger side.
If you have rear A/C then it's 4 lbs total - that's about 5x 12ox cans (16oz =1 pound, small cans are only 12oz). without I believe is around 3.6lbs

Have you checked to make sure the old valve is completely screwed in? Don't buy anything from HF period. Rent one from the LAP or get a cheapo on Amazingzon.

Yeah, it is screwed on tight. I checked the websites on a bunch of auto parts stores near me about their loaner tools, but I don't see any that loan a vacuum pump. It would have been nice not having to buy one.

Give your LAPS a call, they may have it but don't have it listed. Mine didn't have one listed but they do carry them for loaners.

Bought on e-bay a tool set that allows removing the core and NOT loose any gas From national car parts store I was quoted $79.00 for EACH tool one for high side and one for low side. I bought both for R134 and snap they onto the proper port for $19.00 for the PAIR. Made of BRASS good quality. No instructions were supplied but self explanatory if studied for a couple minutes and well worth the purchase. Can use it many times and lasts for years

Thanks for telling me to call. You were right, they don't show up on their website for the loaner tool program, but they do have them for $155 deposit. I'm going there now. Thanks again!

Question on the AC Delco 15-5438, will that fit both the high and low valves?

the high side and low side are different sizes, so no, that wont work for both, but there might be one for the other side as well.

High pressure side is the same as a valve stem for a tire.

Okay, I replaced the high pressure schrader valve and put a vacuum on it for 10 or 15 minutes and it won't hold after few minutes. So I must have another leak. Can I just add refrigerant and dye without the pag oil so I can find the leak? Will I harm the compressor by doing that? Also, I forgot to oil the O ring on the new high pressure schrader valve port, is that absolutely necessary?

No it wont hurt it using just the dye. No the o ring will be fine. It is probably the seal under the clutch on the compressor that leaks and the dye will not help you find that.
