1999 GMC Safari AWD w/ rear a/c.
Issue is a/c not working on van. The system was completely empty, clutch not engaging. To troubleshoot I figured may as well see if the system works so I filled with 48oz R134a refrigerant. Clutch engaged and the the air blew cold. Well, cool - not cold. Within a few days or less (I don't drive it everyday) the coolant had completely leaked out and a/c clutch no longer engages and no cool air.
The bearing on the compressor started making a constant screeching sound when the clutch is not engaged, which was not there before. I would like to make that go away while I figure everything else out. I also noticed some wetness appear on the compressor after adding the refrigerant. Is this the infamous belly joint leak?
A few minutes after adding 48oz coolant to empty system. Noticed small wet area on compressor.
4 days later, no cool air, clutch no longer engaging. Large wet area on compressor visible. Also a horrible screeching sound began.
Video Link Here is a short video file with audio showing the awful bearing sound. How can I fix this? Does compressor need replaced?
