Blower fan only works on low speeds NOT HIGH

Blower fan only works on low speeds NOT HIGH

Postby vagabond [OP] » November 14th 2013, 1:32am

I was told that when the heater fan only works on high that it is the relay. I believe this, but, I can't find a part on line for a blower relay. The only thing I can find is the fan switch and the resistor available for parts. Is there a relay and where can I find it on a 94 Astro. It is starting to get cold in Minnesota and High Speed would be welcome.
Please set this old man straight.

It only works on high as the title says or it won't work on high as in the description. The rest of the speeds work?

Some threads to read.

viewtopic.php?f=76&t=17846&p=186189&hilit=no+high+speed+blower#p186189

I found the post talking about it but nobody ever answered with where it is.

viewtopic.php?f=34&t=14788&p=158057&hilit=no+high+speed+blower#p158057

And as a mutiplier target high speed is always going through the air conditioner switch as well. So if it is burnt.....
Again this all hearsay to me I never had the problem I just passing all I just read in the threads.

Thanks for your assistance!! I will try your suggestions.. By the way, I also saw a thread that says a 30 amp fuse is used to bypass the resistor on high speed. If I find it and it is blown, I will update this thread. If the offending fuse is there and fails again, I will have to replace the blower. Just Thinking out loud.   Pat

Pat,

The "high" fan setting engages a relay which is located down by the blower assembly (in front of the passenger's feet, accessible from the engine bay with the hood open). to get to the blower control card, you need to remove the over flow tank, the windshield washer tank, and then some 8mm screws which fasted the resistor array to the inside of the blower assembly.
I have a schematic below, where the blower is in the center of the page.
I have also attached a picture of my resistor assembly with wire harness.
Note the A/C heat exchanger assembly in the back ground.
There are also some YouTube videos for the Astro/Safari blower resistor pack removal.

OOPs.. just noticed that you have a 1994 van, which may be a bit different than what I showed.
Perhaps Maher can fill in the differences.

Ok, I had the same problem. I know this info is late but this was a tricky one to diagnose and I would like to help others in the future with this problem. Btw mine is a 94 also.

Ok... The high speed fan relay just above the blower under the hood has 5 wires. Black is ground. Blue is the blower resister feed. Tan is the resister bypass. When 12 volt is switched on tan ( when you turn dash switch to speed 4) it throws the relay to bypass the blue wire (resister feed)Thick Purple is the direct wire that goes to the fan........

Now the thick red is where the problem is. That red wire has a fuseable link in the harness somewhere according to Alldata. That fuseable link melts down... and presto... no high speed fan. The solution. ... wait for it..... run a new thick gage wire and in line fuse directly to the battery. I use a 15 amp and it works fine. That red wire is full time hot anyway. JUST BE SURE TO CAP THE OLD WIRE OFF!

What made this a tricky one to find was that my fuseable link didn't fail completely. So when I tested the red wire with the blower unplugged or dash switch set to off, I was still showing 12 volts. But with a load on... (blower plugged in and switch set on high) showing 700mv. Stupid fuseable links!!!!!!!

Check the terminal,

As you can see illustrated in the picture the High speed has a tendency to overheat dug to resistance. It melts the plug contact - female and resistor pack prong - male. The resister pack male end can physically be melted and pushed through the back of the resistor pack careful.

The first removal might require cutting to access the resistor pack. Mine was a little over cut but there are templates online to help you.

Sometimes cleaning, conductive grease, copper wire, and pulling the wire up can make temporary fix.

I have done all 3 of these and ultimately the male end heated and pushed threw a few months later. I pushed it back placed a penny behind the pin and rapped electrical tape on it and I am expecting to get it fixed when I feel like going to the junk yard.

It gives me a problem every other week Just need to baby it another summer.
