Guidelines for using the
feature properly

Guidelines for using the
feature properly

Postby AstroAustin [OP] » June 8th 2010, 12:55am

How and when to use the quote feature in your posts

  1. NEVER quote a post that is directly above yours.
Quoting a post that directly precedes your post is redundant, pointless, and takes up more space on the page. Avoid using the quote button unless you are referring to a post made more than one post back up the list.

  2. Don't forget to quote when appropriate.
When you are quoting the words of someone else, you MUST put it inside a quotation box; otherwise, it is misrepresented. Avoid saying "this is what I found: blah blah blah" without using the quote feature to give credit to the person who said it originally. Those words can be mistaken as your own.
Put it inside a box, like this, otherwise people will think it is your own words.

  3. Quote using the name of the person who said it.
The site does this automatically when you click the quote button but just in case... remember to add the ="Bill Gates" part when quoting so it will tell the reader who wrote it originally.
    Code: Select all
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
For example:
    CORRECT:
Bill Gates wrote:The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

    INCORRECT:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.

  4. NEVER nest more than two quotes inside each other.
Nesting more than two quotes inside one another makes it very difficult to read and can be very hard the eyes. When more than one quote is quoted (or "nested") is can be confusing and difficult to follow.
This is the outer quote which has two quotes nested inside of it.
This is the middle quote nested inside the first which has another post that it is quoting.
This is the inner quote nested inside the two quotes way too deep to be useful.

This is protocol that is followed throughout almost all internet forums to avoid misunderstandings and confusion in forum conversation. Many people read through dozens of messages per day, so it is important to have a unified formatting system that everyone uses properly. I hope this has been helpful.

Thank you, I have tried not to quote when I am first one after the poster that I wanted to respond to. Several times someone posts before I am able to submit my thoughts. I have seen the disclaimer, or what ever, but sometimes It is too slow.

What do I do when this happens, use the Edit button and add the post or just how does one fix this problem.

Thanks, Keith

It also makes it more difficult to find out who said what... Believe me I know... Ask me how sometime. Jim

Ya know the more I think about this, the more I am amused.

After all aren't we just a bunch of regular guys... You know the kind who communicate with grunts around the open hood of an AstroSafari Van?

This reminds me of High School literature 101. And we all know how that turned out... Well maybe not. Suffice it to say I grunt... a lot. Jim

Sometimes I will purposely quote without their name simply because I truncated their statement and I figured that the statement itself is more important to point out than indicating who actually said it.. as to say that I am commenting back at what was said more so than the specific person so that they wouldn't think that I am targeting them directly.

But I will be sure to properly credit my posts.

Postby Lumpy » October 7th 2010, 10:15pm

Yeah, sorry, but if I'm commenting on someone's previous post, I'm going to quote him. I snip
it wherever possible. But I'm not about to start replying without quoting who I'm replying to.

When you click on the little icon that takes you to "unread posts", if you
go to a post that's referring back to someone else's statement, you have
to scroll back, or sometimes page back, to see what that person said.
That seems like a lot of silly and unnecessary work. Simpler to just include
the appropriate text from the person you're commenting on. That's especially
important if you haven't visited that thread or the forum at all for quite a while.

For those of us with vision impairments that need a giant font and
screen resolution, that's just vital.

Hope that's not too much of a problem for you, Bert.
If it is, just let me know.
