Need help to find another rear axle for my -89Astro

Postby NorwegianAstro [OP] » January 3rd 2009, 2:45am

Hi every one

I have a problem. I would like to put wider wheels on my -89 astro

Image
This is my Van

Image
Here are my wheels 15"x10"

I need a rear axle from a GM car with a V8 engine, 10bolt rear axle? That is shorter than the original Astro axle. Can any one help out to find a rear axle to my van? I want my wheels under the original fender...

Image
As you can see here, plenty of room on the inside...

Image
But the axle is too wide...

My axle are 149,7cm between brakedrums...

Hello,

I have been looking into this for a while. I am going to tube my van this spring and need to find a skinny rear axle to accommodate my project. Only problem is that I couldn't find one. Thru all of my research, the 10 bolt in the astro/safaris are the narrowest GM makes. Now there is a hole in some of my research involving S-10s. From what I could find, S-10s were the same or wider than that of our vans. I have heard from other people I talked to about it that S-10s do come with narrower rear ends than our vans but I never found any information to back that claim up.

Sorry, I know that doesn't really help much. What I have had to due with my van is install a Ford 9 inch rearend (also be done in the spring). I was lucky to find one off of a 1964 Falcon and its only 52" wide (132 cm).

Any chance you can get wheels with different backspacing?

S10 diff's are aboujt 5" narrower then astros. the best and most direct diff is a 9" out of late 70's and early 80's ford e-150 vans, do to the center section offset. the diff is about 2" narrower

different backspacing on the wheels would be the easiest fix, or find someone that can narrow down your stock diff. then you would need custom axle shafts made to fit the narrower diff.

There is a '88 Astro in Sweden with 515/45-15 tyres, however that rear axle is severely custom-built,
a shortened 12-bolt GM with LSD and Strange-axles. Expensive perhaps?
If you can find Bilsport nr 13/09 it's on page 32.
Don't have a scanner, otherwise I'd scan the pages for you.

Astro rear axles are around 66 1/2" from wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face (brake drum at studs).
The S10 units are 54" wide. Problem is the Astro center section is quite offset to the passenger side, but the S10 is centered on the tubes.
I was researching this, and had an S10 rear axle, but it would have been more touble to lengthen one tube and have a new axle made to lengthen the drivers side.
I ended up shortening (for a second time) my already narrowed housing. Moser Engineering made my axles for the first narrowing, and had the foresight to make the shafts a constant diameter, so they could be shortened again. It worked well and I stuffed some 20 X 10's in the fenderwells, but not before I fabricated a new subframe and relocated all the suspension inboard.

Sorry guy's, there doesn't seem to be a direct fit housing for our application. You have to have one made, or make it yourself.
